COURSE CONTENT: The secondary art program for Grades 7–12 is a unified sequential course which focuses on three major components of visual learning: DRAWINGS or delineations– all the ways we record visual information and discoveries. COMPOSITIONS or structures– all the ways images are put together to create meaning. ENCOUNTERS with art– where we meet and how we respond to visual imagery. Art 7/8/9 engages students in graphite drawing, charcoal, color theory, acrylic painting, printmaking and art history. Students will explore the principals and elements of art in preparatory and follow-up activities relating to the creation of their works in art. There is an emphasis placed on demonstrating artistic abilities, skills and techniques in creating and presenting art. Course content also includes cultural and historical influences on art, artistic movements through the ages, and art appreciation.Throughout the semester, students will document their processes as well as complete finished works of art. Visual Arts is divided into five portfolios. Each portfolio contains workbook exercises, reflections, historical notes, and a final project. In addition, students will have an opportunity to apply certain concepts to complete a personal study of their choice.
