❖ School Attributes:

Mater Academy Middle & High School strives to cultivate consistency in learning to reach the highest potential in every learner by meeting each student’s needs. At Mater Academy we encourage and develop positive relationships among students, teachers, and support staff. We nurture an academic environment in which the students can master the core academic areas at a high level of proficiency for academic achievement. The curriculum is developed according to the standards of the State of Florida with a vertically integrated structure facilitating students the knowledge and skills required to success.

❖ Course Description:

|Students enrolled in the Biology Honors will explore the vast amount of information found within biology. This course will incorporate new perspectives and |

|understanding across major sub disciplines of biology ecology, evolution, cellular functions, cell biology, human body systems, biochemistry, genetics, and |

|molecular biology are some of the areas covered. The focus of the course is to develop an extensive knowledge of Biology as an introductory course to prepare |

|students for college. Lab practice is required, and participation is encouraged. Students are required to read and interpret scientific works, as well as they will |

|practice writing their own research projects along with lab reports. Students who are in this program should expect a robust amount of both class work and homework.|

❖ Classroom Expectations:

1. Students will come to class on time prepared and ready to learn.

2. Students will complete all assignments, including homework, by all deadlines. Make-up work is only accepted after an excused absence. It is your responsibility to see me for your work before or after school.

3. All students will be silent and respectful while other students read/participate aloud.

4. Teacher and students will work together for a respectful classroom and safe environment.

5. Participation in class discussions will enhance all students’ learning experiences.

6. Students are expected to have all assigned class assignments, projects completed; this may require some of them to be completed outside of the classroom.

7. The use of cell phones and any other electronic personal devices are always prohibited in class.

8. Be responsible, be respectful, be patience and be kind.

9. Manage high standards of integrity and tell the truth.

10. Abide by school and county rules.

❖ Discipline Policy:

Students are always expected to follow the Miami- Dade County Code of Student Conduct on campus,

virtual campus, and at any school related events. The Student Code of Conduct can be found at

❖ Student Evaluation:

The grading system for the Science Department at Mater Academy Middle & High School is as follows:

The above areas will be used as the basis for your grade per quarter. Additionally, the Biology End-of-Course Exam will be administered in the spring and constitutes 30% of your final course grade.

❖ Attendance Policy:

Regular and prompt class attendance is an essential part of the educational experience. Mater Academy Middle & High School expects students to exercise good judgment regarding attendance and absences. Students will accept full responsibility for ensuring their work does not suffer because of absences. All students are expected to attend every scheduled class on time. Exceptions may be made for illness and valid emergencies.

❖ Tardy Policy

A student is late to class if they are not in their assigned seat at the time the bell has rung. After three unexcused tardiness, parent/guardian will be contacted. If unexcused tardiness continues, a referral will be issued and the student will be sent to administration (principal, assistant principal, guidance counselor).

❖ Class Requirements:

This course will be presented through a series of class activities, lectures, discussions, assignments, laboratories, multimedia, and social network. All students are expected to be prepared and read chapter assignments before class. Students will be required to complete and pass class assignments, research projects, tests/exams, and homework on assigned due date. Students will also be required to research outside of class, participate meaningfully and respectfully in classroom discussions, maintain good attendance, have a respectful and positive attitude, and come to class ready to learn!

❖ Assignments, Homework, and Lab Reports:

Late homework and lab reports are not acceptable. All assignments are accepted only on due date. Teachers are to provide within five days requested student-parent make up assignment for all excused absences/tardiness. It should be noted that all course work, due to nature of instruction, is not readily subject to make-up work.

Exception: If student miss class with an excused absence the missing assignments and work should be submitted on the first day student returns to class.

Grade Policy for Exception: one letter grade will be deducted for each day a lab report is late. Note: No lab report/assignments will be accepted beyond one week late (5 school days).

Labs: Students will be given prior notice to which days labs will be held to plan accordingly and be prepared.

Principals may grant extensions to the make-up time limit for extenuating circumstances.

Unexcused absence:

Make-up Unexcused absences do not require that the teacher provide make-up work for the student. However, the Attendance Review Committee may assign educationally related activities to mitigate the loss of instructional time.

Electronic Device: Tablet, iPad, or Laptop. USB Flash Drive -16 GB. 1 Subject Spiral Notebook. Pencils. Pens. Colored Pencils. Markers and High Lighters. Eraser & Sharpener. Glue Sticks, Scissors, and a Ruler. Post-it Notes. Kleenex, Hand Sanitizer, Lysol Wipes

Students are required to bring/use their electronic device and binder/comp notebook every day.

Class will be a combination of Zoom meetings for class instruction, teaching, and directions also to

There will be plenty of class activities to encourage critical thinking through class discussion, lectures, videos, cooperative learning, and problem-based learning also interactive games, virtual lab experience, and simulator activities will be used in this course. Grades will be determined by the satisfactory and timely completion of assignments. The grade of each assignment is based on the prerequisite/rubrics given for each assignment.
