COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a required class for graduation; therefore, hard work, participation, and the highest of expectations are demanded. In this course students will be expected to master the concepts of systems of equations and inequalities, matrices, quadratic functions, polynomial functions, power functions, exponential functions, logarithmic functions, rational functions, and trigonometric functions. Students will also be expected to mater the concepts of conic sections, sequences and series, and probability.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Each class period students are expected to come prepared. Textbook, notebook, writing tools, and a calculator are required each day. Graphing calculators, specifically, the Texas Instruments TI Nspire, will be provided. Students are required to use these tools with care and respect. Calculators will be assigned using a numbering system, and students will be held responsible for the care of the calculator.

CLASSROOM RULES & EXPECTATIONS

• Students must be dressed according to school expectations

• Zero tolerance on cell phones in the classroom and hallways unless permitted; students may use a cell phone during lunchtime only. If a student has a cell phone in a classroom without permission, the phone will be removed and taken to the office for pick up by a parent. Additionally, if a cell phone is out during a quiz or test, the student will receive a zero on the quiz or test.

• Use of Ipods and MP3 players in the classroom is only permitted when the teacher agrees.

• Handheld video style games (i.e., PSP, Gameboys, etc.) are not permitted in the classroom.

• Students are expected to arrive to class on time!

• Students are expected to treat all students, teachers, administrators, and the school grounds with respect.

ATTENDANCE

If you miss a day of school, it is your responsibility, and yours only, to get the assignment and/or notes provided that day. You will only be allowed to make up work for an excused absence (2 days for each excused absence). Any unexcused absence will result in no credit, including tests.

ASSIGNMENTS / GRADING SCALE

The grading system used in my class is based on 75% assessment and 25% homework, notes, etc. The following grading scale will be used:

92.5%-100% A 77.5%-79.49% C+ 59.5%-62.49% D-

89.5%-92.49% A- 72.5%-77.49% C 49.5%-59.49% E

87.5%-89.49% B+ 69.5%-72.49% C- 0-49.49% E-

82.5%-87.49% B 67.5%-69.49% D+

79.5%-82.49% B- 62.5%-67.49% D

Homework will be given most days; however, it will be only collected on Tuesday (unless otherwise noted). One random assignment per week will be evaluated at this time. Homework is assessed on the basis of completeness, thoroughness, and neatness. Each homework assignment is worth 3 points. Late homework is not accepted.

Tests and quizzes will be announced ahead of time and will vary in point value. Tests will take place at the end of each unit, while quizzes will fluctuate in frequency. Test corrections and retakes will be allowed from time to time.

Notes are required to be taken by each student. Each marking period will contain a note quiz, worth 10 points. If you take legible and organized notes, you should ace this quiz.
