Problem solving skills, mathematical and otherwise, are stressed, so the student should have strong math skills, and be comfortable working with word problems. Work outside the classroom includes assigned homework and lab reports, but the course also requires the student to independently review class notes, read the text, and take initiative to ensure understanding of topics and theories. The course is intended as preparation for Chemistry 2 AP course, and therefore will cover topics more advanced than Chemistry 1. (From Riverside Campus Course Catalog)Materials: The following materials/supplies will be needed:Textbook [Modern Chemistry]1-1.5” Three Ring BinderScientific Calculator (does not need to be graphing)Pen and pencilPaperAttendance: Attendance is critical as many topics in chemistry build on those previously learned. Students who miss class for any reason are responsible for all work and information missed. Homework: Homework will be given on a nightly basis. It will consist of worksheets, packets, CALM, and recommended book questions (RBQs). Homework will be collected and graded based on correctness and completeness. RBQs are never collected, but highly recommended to enhance understanding of topics. Homework will make up 10% of your grade. Late, missing, or incomplete assignments will be dealt with as shown below. The student is responsible for getting any work missed due to absence. First offense : Warning Second offense : Warning Third offense : Parent Contact Fourth offense : Parent Contact Fifth offense : After School Detention Sixth offense : After School DetentionLaboratory: Students who are absent on the day of a lab must make arrangements to complete the lab within one week of the lab. Labs that are not made up within one week will be recorded as zeros. One day advanced notice is required for lab makeup. Labs make up 10% of your grade. Quizzes and Tests:Quizzes will be given periodically throughout the course. They will check for comprehension of reading and calculations. Tests will be given at the end of a unit. They will vary in style including multiple choice, short answer, problem solving, and essay questions. It is the student’s responsibility to make up any missed quiz or test. If a student is absent on the day of a test or quiz, he/she will be expected to take the test or quiz on the day he/she returns. A test is considered complete when turned in. Questions or pages left blank cannot be done at a later time. Quizzes, chapter tests, and quarter tests make up 80% of your grade.Grading Policy: Grades will be based on a point system. Students will receive points for homework, class work, laboratory work, quizzes, and tests. The percentage grade will be determined by dividing total points by the points possible, applying the weights for assignments given above, and applying the percentage to the following scale. There is no extra credit, and grades are not rounded in the event a grade is close to the next highest grade. Grading Scale A = 100-90.0% B = 89.99-80.0% C = 79.99-70.0% D = 69.99-60.0% F = 59.99-0.00%I am available for extra help at school during any of the following times: ? Before school - Every Day ?
