LAB SAFETY CONTRACT

Please read the following text VERY carefully. Be sure you understand all the laboratory safety the teacher talks about. Those outlined below are considered the most important but are by no means the only lab safety rules. During pre-lab discussion, you will be made aware of safety procedures germane to that lab.

By signing the attached sheet, you are stating that you will abide by all lab rules and watch out for your safety as well as that of your neighbors. Remember that all lab work is done at my (the teacher’s) discretion. If I feel a student is acting in an unsafe manner they will be asked to sit in a desk and refrain from performing the lab at that time. The student will be given an after school make-up date to do the lab when I am able to supervise them more closely.

The chemistry laboratory is a safe place to experiment if you are careful. You must assume responsibility for the safety of yourself AND those around you. The following are some safety rules to help guide you in protecting yourself and others from injury in the science laboratory.

1. The chemistry laboratory is to be used for serious work. Do NOT perform experiments that are unauthorized. ALWAYS obtain teacher permission.

2. Study your lab assignment BEFORE you start the lab. If you are in doubt about any procedure, ask the teacher for help.

3. Safety goggles and laboratory aprons are available for you. Know where they are and use them when appropriate.

4. Long hair should be tied back. Avoid wearing clothing with loose sleeves as they may catch on fire. Avoid wearing sandals or any other open-toe shoe in the lab.

5. Use the safety equipment provided for you. Know the location of the fire extinguisher, safety shower eye- wash, fire blanket, fuse box and the first aid kit. Listen carefully to the safety lecture that gives instructions on how and when to use each device.

6. Report any accident, injury or incorrect procedure to your teacher at once.

7. If you spill ANY CHEMICAL, wash it off immediately with a large amount of water. Remember to report it!

8. NEVER TASTE ANY CHEMICAL SUBSTANCE.

9. Smother fires with a wet towel and make sure the gas jets are off. If clothing should catch fire, smother it with the fire blanket or coat or quench it under the safety shower. Know where the main gas valve is for the room and how to shut it off in an emergency.

10. Handle chemicals carefully. Check the label of all bottles before removing the contents. Do not return unused chemicals to reagent bottles.

11. Keep combustible materials away from open flames. (Some combustible materials are: PAPERS, CLOTHING and organic compounds like rubbing alcohol, as well as Group 1 & 2 metals like magnesium.)

12. When heating a substance in a test tube, be careful not to point the mouth of the test tube at another person or yourself.

13. Use caution and the proper equipment to handle hot glassware.

COOL GLASS LOOKS THE SAME AS HOT GLASS!!

14. Place broken glass and solid substances in designated containers. Keep SOLID waste material out

of the sink. Dispose of precipitates according to the teacher’s directions.
