Due to the emphasis on advanced problem solving, incorporating algebraic skills, and a variety of laboratory activities, it is highly recommended that students have earned a “B” or higher in Algebra I. This course meets the physical science graduation requirement.Course Objectives:To meet all objectives for Chemistry as set forth by the Alabama Course of Study which can be accessed by going to: Items Needed:There is a course fee for this class.Classroom Expectations:Respect yourself and your future.Respect your fellow students and their right to learn.Respect your teacher.Respect your schools property and community.** Please also review remote learning expectations.Policies:Concerning Cell PhonesCell phones may only be used for class activities. Cell phones are to be stored in a phone tree that is behind my desk. This is to ensure that students can focus on instruction. Should a student need access to their phones to contact parents etc they can ask permission to do so. Student refusal to follow the cell phone guidelines may lead to admin referral.Concerning laptop utilization:1. Under no circumstances are student laptops to be wired to the network or have print capabilities.2. No discs, flash drives, jump drives, or other USB devices will be allowed.3. Neither the teacher, nor the school is responsible for broken, stolen, or lost laptops. 4. Laptops will be used at the individual discretion of the teacher. Note: 1. The academic misconduct policy of the school will be followed in this course.2. The attendance policy of the school will be followed for this course.3. Any student who receives failing grades during this course is urged to discuss this with the teacher immediately.BJ Grading Policy:Grading Policy:Test 70% Daily 30% Daily WorkDaily work consists of quizzes, labs, bellwork, and homework/class assignments.Homework will generally be assigned problems from worksheets or online assignments from Cengage Learning. If you do not have access to a computer/internet at home you will need to notify me for an alternate assignment. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to ask for make-up work. It is also your responsibility to turn the homework in within two days of a missed absence. In the case of extended excused absences due to illness or extenuating circumstances, other arrangements may be discussed. Homework may not be made up if an absence is unexcused, however, you will still be responsible for all material covered.***During remote learning all assignments will be in Schoology.QuizzesQuizzes are generally announced and will cover problems that are covered in a unit or chapter. Lab:We generally complete at least one lab per week. Labs will be assessed through lab reports and/or lab quizzes. If you miss a lab, you are still responsible for all lab reports and quizzes, however the lab itself cannot be made up. Any questions should be discussed with your lab partner or teacher.*** In the case of remote learning, labs will be conducted through simulations and/or virtual labs.Tests:Tests will always be announced and given at the end of a unit or chapter. There is to be no unauthorized material out during a test or quiz. Make sure that any notes, study guides, etc., are in your notebook or backpack (in other words out of sight) during a test or quiz. Any student who does not adhere to this policy will receive a zero. ***During remote learning, all tests will be given in Schoology. BJ Make-up Test Policy:Missed tests and quizzes will be made up on Thursday mornings at 7:15 or during Patriot Path -no exceptions. Students must make up a missed test or quiz within the first two Thursdays following an absence. Students who arrive late for a make-up test may not receive extra time to finish the test and any uncompleted sections will be counted as incorrect. Tests and quizzes may not be made up if an absence is unexcused.****In the case of remote learning, students must contact the teacher via email if they are unable to take a test or quiz on the assigned day and/or time. This communication should take place before the test/quiz is set to begin. Remind /SchoologyIf you would like to sign up for remind texts from me, you will be given a number and a code to access Remind for this class. All text messaging fees apply. You will not be able to respond to texts from me. Cell phone numbers are confidential (you can’t see my number and I can’t see yours). Both parents and students are encouraged to join. ****During remote learning all assignments and resources will be available in Schoology. Your grade will solely be based on the grading policy set above. Tutoring is available Thursday at 7:15 and during Patriot Path if a student needs additional help. Students are encouraged to ask for extra help.****During remote learning, tutoring will be available virtually through WebEx. Virtual tutoring links will be posted in Schoology. I will offer tutoring at different times throughout the day. If the posted tutoring times are not convenient for you, please email me to set up a time.
