The focus is on competency in reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. A variety of activities both in class and outside will be used to build on previous knowledge and strengthen these skills. As an understanding of cultural similarities and differences is essential to communication, we will also learn about the culture, history and geography of the people who speak the Spanish language. Students will therefore be able to express themselves both orally and in writing at a more advanced level. Literary works by Spanish and Latin-American writers will be introduced and students will be required to write short compositions and prepare oral presentations. The course is conducted in the target language and students will be expected to speak in the target language in the classroom setting.

Expectations: It is expected that every student will:

• Be an active member of class activities.

• Enter class on time with student ID ON, and cell phones OFF.

Practice/Classwork and Homework grades will be averaged for one grade for each

grade reporting period. Work is due when assigned.

Quizzes will count 2 times.

Quizzes consist of reading, listening, speaking and writing assessments.

Tests will count 4 times.

If all assigned homework is completed within a 6-week period grading period, a Homework Bonus of 2 points will be directly added onto the six-week average. Bonus point activities will be provided throughout each 6 weeks grading period.

Work deadlines: Assignments not completed when due will result in a grade of 0. In the event of an excused absence or lateness, it is your responsibility to find out what work you have missed, obtain copies of handouts and schedule with the teacher for turning in make-up work and making up quizzes. All quizzes and tests must be made up within one week’s time.

Citizenship Grades: Students are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful manner, in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. No disrespect or inappropriate attitude will be tolerated. Students caught cheating or allowing others to cheat, will receive a 0 as a grade and a C in citizenship. This will affect eligibility for NHS and parents will be notified in accordance with District policies and procedures.

Use of Electronic Devices: This is a NO BYOT USAGE classroom. No electronic devices shall be out, on or visible in class without specific individual authorization from me for assigned activities. Disciplinary action for failure to follow instructions consistent with MHS rules will be enforced.
