About This Guide

This guide is intended to help TAY (transition age youth) and suppor- tive adults to make informed decisions about programs designed to help them succeed in obtaining their high school diploma or GED cer- tificate. Services and fees vary from one program to the next and are outlined in this guide. To make this process easier, this guide ad- dresses common questions one may have when deciding on a pro- gram, such as, do they offer the GED test or the CAHSEE exam? Does this program offer GED prep classes? How much is the GED test? And so much more!

All services are available for transition age youth, however, if you are a current or former foster youth, or a youth from the juvenile proba- tion system, you may be eligible to have your registration and test fees covered by Alameda County Independent Living Skills Program (ILSP).

Thanks to the staff at the adult schools and organizations listed in this guide for their commitment to providing services to transition age youth and perse- vering during a time of economic crisis. Most of all, thanks to the transition age youth for their courage and determination.

What you should know...

To earn a high school diploma you must pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). If you haven't passed the CAHSEE, it can be taken at an adult school or program that offers the exam.

The GED (General Education Development) is a certificate that is

equivalent to a high school diploma. If you're interested in obtaining

your GED, you must pass all five subject tests:

Language Arts: Writing Language Arts: Reading

Social Studies

Science

Mathematics

GED prep classes are a great way to prepare for the GED exam. In most cases, classes are offered several times a week along with a GED practice test to evaluate whether you're ready to take the GED exam. GED prep classes are highly recommended prior to taking the exam to ensure successful results.

It's common for schools or the organization to require an assessment prior to starting a high school or GED prep program. The assessment allows the counselors to evaluate your reading and math skill levels.

What you should ask...

There are various fees required, such as, registration fee, textbook fee and/or test fee. Fees will vary from one program to the next, so it is important for you to ask what fees are required and how much they are. If you are a current or former foster youth, or a youth from the juvenile probation system, you may be eligible to have your registration and test fees covered by Alameda County Independent Living Skills Program (ILSP).

Choose a program at a school or organization easily accessible by public transportation. Ask for the closest bus line or BART station.

All programs require a certain amount of commitment. So you should decide if the program you're considering works well with your schedule, i.e. job, daycare, and/or school.

What's next? What would you like to do after you get your high school or GED? This is an important question that you may or may not know the answers to. The pathways can vary from going to college, a job training program, employment, military, and/or a service program. What ever pathway you choose to take, completing your high school education with a diploma or GED is the most important first step!
