Leadership

North Carolina Community Development Initiative, Inc. Summer Youth Community Economic Development Leadership Internship, June 20-August 12, 2011

o Eight week, PAID, internship with a community development corporation in their local community

o Work experience, leadership training, insight into a career field

o Rising seniors, NC resident, commitment to continuing high school and post-secondary education

University of Alabama Capstone Business Leadership Academy, June 13-22 or July 11-20, 2011

o 10 day summer residential program designed for academically exceptional rising seniors interested in pursuing a career in business.

o Includes trips throughout the region to visit professionals at top employers of business school graduates

o $350.00 tuition, scholarships available

o Requirements: GPA 3.4; Scores: 27 ACT or 1210 SAT; 140 PSAT

Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge, June 19-23 or June 26-30, 2011

o Five-day residential program featuring free market economics; students form companies by working in small groups

o Wingate University

UNCW Need 2 Lead, June 22-25, 2011

o 20 rising juniors are selected state-wide to attend an intense leadership weekend at UNCW. The student needs to be passionate about making a difference in their school or community.

o Student must be nominated to apply by East Forsyth. If you are interested, please check out the website uncw.edu/need2lead and then see Mrs. Planté no later than March 25.

The Shelton Challenge, NC State Leadership Camps

o One-week summer experience for high school students focusing on leadership roles and accountability, team building, leadership styles and situations, social responsibility, integrity, and more.

o Any grade level, minimum 3.0 GPA

o Cost: $575.00 (deposit, lodging, meals and the program curriculum)

Internship with Congressman Melvin L. Watt 12th district, North Carolina, June 6-August 5, 2011

o Students interested in learning more about public service, the federal government and the operations of a congressional office are encourage to apply, especially those students who are interested in majoring in the social sciences.

Wake Forest Volunteen, 2 days per week, June 27-August 12, 2011

o Students 14-18 are eligible to apply for the program which enables them to see the inner workings of a major medical center while also learning the value of service to the community.

Forensic Anthropology Summer Residential Camps, Appalachian State, July 17-22 & 24-29, 2011

o Hands on experience in forensic analysis of the human skeleton.

Sewanee Environmental Institute’s Pre-College Field Studies Experience, June 26-July 9, 2011

o Participants spend two weeks exploring the ecosystems of the Cumberland Plateau.

Appalachian State U. Anatomy and Physiology Camps, June 19-25 or June 26-July 2, 2011

o One week residential camp which will provide hands-on experience studying the major organ systems of the body and diseases which affect the body

o Open to students grades 9-12 with a strong interest in the sciences and considering a future in the field

o Cost: $1,100 which includes 6 nights in residence hall, 16 meals total, lab manual and supplemental materials; limited illness/accident insurance

WSSU High School Research Apprenticeship Program, June 20-July 8, 2011

o Three-week non-residential program which will acquaint rising juniors and seniors about career opportunities and research experiences in Science, Technology, engineering, and Math (STEM)

o Participants receive a $300.00 stipend

o Students must show strong interest in studying STEM at WSSU

Summer Engineering Corse for Rising Senior and Junior Girls, July 24-29, 2011, Sweetbriar College

o The course is built around hands-on, team-based engineering design challenges

o Students will be introduced to theoretical and practical aspects of all forms of transportation.
