Students evaluate and respond to these works through essays, oral presentations, projects, and small group activities. Student voice and style will be developed through formal and informal writing assignments, which include various essay forms and styles outlined by the California State Content Standards. Writing will focus on syntax, diction, mechanics, grammar, and the use of literary devices. The 1st Quarter introduces the elements of fiction and poetry and basic writing conventions. The 2nd Quarter will focus on the novel and its conventions (the instructor reserves the right to change authors on a year by year, class by class basis).
