Course Description: : Students will use marketing concepts, functions, theories, and computerized tools to analyze the ways in which economic, consumer, and environmental variables affect the marketing process.

This course is designed to give the student a general introduction to marketing. The student will design and create advertisements, promotional campaigns and sales presentations. The student will expand their communication skills by giving oral presentations. The student will also research the functions of business dealing with a company’s background, history, operations, management functions, sales, interviewing and hiring process. The students will use various resources such as technology, supplemental materials and research.

Course Objectives:

• Enable students to understand and use technology to perform marketing activities.

• Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of business ethics.

• Explain the management concept of marketing.

• Demonstrate the importance of communication and using it effectively.

• Utilize a variety of types of interactions with the business community.

Course Outcomes:

Students will be introduced to the broad-based foundational areas; Distribution, Financing, Marketing-Information Management, Pricing, Product/Service Management, Promotion, Selling, Communication and Professional Organizations. It will also enable students to acquire broad understandings of and skills in marketing so that they can transfer their skills and knowledge between and among industries.

Student Expectations:

• Students are expected to abide by the Appoquinimink School District Code of Conduct at all times.

• Be responsible-attend class every day, be punctual, complete assignments

• Be ready to learn-be prepared, be attentive, participate in class

* Food and or beverages are not permitted in the computer lab! (includes bottled water)

Procedures:

Daily Operations/Routines – students should be seated at late bell. Log on to computer and begin Journal or opening activity.

Make-up Work –First, check Agenda in classroom assignments, then check with your study buddy and finally, arrange to meet with Ms Riddick outside of class time.

Dismissal – Students are to remain seated for dismissal by the teacher.

Readings, assignments, projects, assessments:

Students will be required to complete a written event and a variety of projects during the course and will be given specific instructions and time lines for each.

Grading Policy:

• Students’ grades will be based on their performance on tests, quizzes, homework, classwork, projects, journal assignments, etc.

• Marking period and semester grades will be calculated according to the Appoquinimink School District Grading Policy. “Product” grades are weighted at 70%, and “Process” grades are weighted at 30%. In an Advanced Placement Course, the weighting is 90% Product, 10% Process. This policy is available on the website, and hard copies are available in the main office.

Extra Help Availability: Extra help is provided by appointment.

Course-specific suggestions for parents and students:

Participation in DECA, a co-curricular activity, is on-going in the marketing classroom with “DECA Connections Activities” throughout the textbook. On-line support is available at and supplemental online activities are detailed in the Marketing Essentials Text - both work in cooperation with National Marketing Standards development and DECA leadership events.
