Welcome to the 2017-2018 Redmond Dance Team tryouts! These tryouts are open to all students that will be (or would be, in the case of home schooled students) attending Redmond High School during the 2017-2018 school year. NO DANCE EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED! Email the Head Coach Natalie Carpenter at ncarpenter@ with specific questions. Thank you for your interest in joining the RHS Dance Team!

Tryout Requirements

Informational Dancer/Parent Meetings:

Dancers trying out for the Redmond Dance Team (including returning members) must attend one of the informational meetings with their parent(s). Dancers who do not attend with their parent will not receive tryout points for that category (see chart below). During these meetings, coaches will pass along information about tryouts, the Dance Team's season and answer general questions. Attending ONE of the following meetings will earn a coaches' signature and full points in this category (see student application for signature page):

Thursday May 25th at 6:30 pm in RHS Cafeteria Tuesday May 30th at 6:30pm in RHS Cafeteria

Teacher/Community Leader Evaluations:

To be completed by 4 spring semester teachers and 1 community leader (5 total). A community leader can be a former/current coach, youth pastor or boss/supervisor etc.; not a family member

For the community leader evaluation, the dance team candidate needs to supply this person with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to be mailed to Head Coach Natalie Carpenter at the high school's address. If the dancer does not do this, the community leader is told to disregard the evaluation form and it will NOT go towards the dancer's tryout score

As evaluation forms are submitted, Coaches will tell candidates which forms they have received and from whom, but it is the dancer's responsibility to follow up with evaluators if they are missing forms. COACHES WILL ACCEPT EVALUATIONS UNTIL MONDAY JUNE 5TH.

Tryout Points:

Aspects of the tryout process has been assigned a point value to help coaches determine candidates' work ethic,

time management and ability to follow directions. Candidates should do their best to meet all the requirements

on time. With higher points, a candidate is more likely to be selected for the squad. ***Please note, items turned

in late will be worth half as many points!!!

Three Things to Know About the RHS Dance Team Before You Tryout

#1 This team is a HUGE time commitment

The competitive dance season starts in November and culminates with the State Championships in March. However, dancers who make the squad should anticipate being busy with team events from June-March; up to 25 hours per week. The dance team's season is long, busy and demanding; a commitment to this team may not be right for everyone. The following is a general outline of the team's summer and school year commitments for the 2017/2018 season:

When 2-3 hours Tuesdays, Wednesdays and

Thursdays starting in June-August July 20th-23rd

What Summer dance technique and strength/conditioning practices

Elite Dance Camp (Team stays overnight)

August 14th-18th and 21st-25th

Dance Team Camp run by coaches and officers (half days at RHS)

September-February Friday nights September-March

Evening football and basketball halftime performances

Practices occur 4-6 times a week for 3-6 hours (afternoons, evenings and/or Saturdays depending on the

availability of RHS gym facilities)

#2 There are fees and fundraising obligations associated with being on this team

There is a sports fee associated with admittance to the squad. Since dance team is a year-round activity, the fee is higher than a seasonal sport (For the 2016-2017 season it was roughly $1200; this pays for team gear dancers keep and camp over the summer). The fee may or may not increase for the 2017/2018 season. There is financial

support available for student athletes through the "RHS Help" program; inquire through the RHS counseling office. Candidates and their parents should also be prepared to assist in fundraising for the squad; this could be in the form of fundraising events and/or individual fundraising by dancers.

#3 Coaches have VERY HIGH expectations of Dancers

Coaches view the Redmond Dance Team as very special. We teach dancers how to dance, and we also mentor and develop their skills as poised, compassionate and respectful young adults. Coaches expect a lot of our dancers; not only their commitment and work ethic associated with the squad, but also their integrity as role models in the RHS student community. The following are examples of behavior which could result in a dancer being put on probation or removed from the squad entirely:

1. Violating the no drug and alcohol policy of the LWSD Athletic Code; this includes socializing with friends who use drugs and/or alcohol, even if the dancer does not

2. Bullying or harassment of any kind, towards anyone 3. Improper use of social media; posting inappropriate photos or content
