TO: The Parents/Guardians of RJ Reynolds JROTC Cadets

FROM: JROTC Staff, RJR

SUBJECT: Welcome

DATE: 19 August, 2010

1. This letter is to welcome our new cadets and their families to the Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (JROTC) community at R.J. Reynolds High School. It is our hope that you will benefit from the many different things we have to offer. To the returning cadets, we say welcome back. We hope that you continue to grow and learn through the program that we have in place here at Reynolds.

2. The JROTC program at R.J. Reynolds is a challenging program that has many different things to interest many different people. Cadets can earn extra points towards their grade by participating in extracurricular activities, but participation is not required. A cadet is still able to earn a grade of “A” even if they do not participate in any activities outside the classroom. Some of our programs are:

A. Drill Team

B. Rifle Team (3 Position Olympic style competition)

C. Raider Team (Adventure Training competition)

D. Color Guard

E. Camping

F. Kayak Trip

G. Community Service Activities (OPERATION Big Sweep, Triad Flight of Honor)

H. Annual Summer Training Camp

I. Military Ball (for cadets and their guests only)

3. Cadets are required to wear the JROTC uniform once a week. Uniforms are to be worn for the entire school day. Uniforms will be inspected on the day of wear. Students will be given a grade that reflects the amount of attention and care they used in preparing their uniform. Cadets that fail to wear their uniform will receive a 0 (zero) grade for that day’s uniform inspection. All uniform items will be supplied except a white t-shirt (required for the male uniform and recommended for the female cadet uniform). The care and cleaning of the uniform is the responsibility of the cadet. All uniforms will be issued clean, in the appropriate size and in good repair. If a cadet needs to exchange a uniform item, it is their responsibility to bring the item to a JROTC instructor and be issued a replacement item. A cadet who refuses to properly wear the uniform will not be able to pass any JROTC course at RJ Reynolds. Cadets are required to return their complete uniform at the end of the school year or at any other time they withdraw from JROTC.

4. The mission of JROTC is, “To motivate young people to become better citizens.” We take this statement very seriously. We are NOT recruiters for any branch of the Armed Forces. We do not attempt to convince cadets to join any of the Armed Forces. Students taking JROTC are under NO obligation to serve in any capacity in any of the Armed Forces. Students that decide to pursue a military career may receive advanced placement and increased initial pay as a result of successful JROTC completion.

5. The JROTC program here at Reynolds has a long and proud history. The students who participate in the program learn valuable life lessons that will benefit them in what ever else they do in high school and later in life. If you ask the students they will probably say they take JROTC because it is fun. We try and do things in the classroom as well as outside the classroom that will be enjoyable for the cadets. Many cadets participate in extracurricular activities just for the fun and sense of belonging these events create.

6. Feel free to call the JROTC office if you have any questions about our course. Our phone number is 727-2449.
