May 13, 1998At the May 12, 1998, meeting of the Shaker Heights Board of Education, the Board recognized the following volunteers, students, and staff members: ? The Board recognized two community volunteers and Shaker parents – Steve Decatur and Harold Forquer – who have advanced the use of technology by students and staff members in the Shaker schools. Harold Forquer has been assisting the school district with technology planning over the past two years. He is a network designer who is employed by Cisco Systems, Inc. He helped to design the District’s computer network and continues to advise the District free of charge about technology needs. Steve Decatur, head of Trend Consulting, has served as a consultant to the district on a pro bono basis over the past two years. His expertise has helped to guide the district’s Technology Committee toward the realization of its initial three goals: library automation, CD-ROM usage in classrooms and Internet access in all our schools. He helps guide the development of the district’s computer network and was an early proponent of training Shaker Heights High School students to help install and maintain the network. ? Four students from Boulevard Elementary School had winning entries in the art contest sponsored by EconomicsAmerica, an economics education partnership based at John Carroll University. This year, more than 200 students from Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga and Lake Counties submitted artwork illustrating an economic concept. Out of these, twelve winners were chosen – and four of the twelve were from Boulevard. They are: Kindergartners Robin Meiskins and Whitney Smartt, both of whom are students of Kathy Wolfe; and Will Caldes and Jordan Hall, who are in Stephanie Eagleton’s second-grade class. ? Once again, Woodbury students turned in outstanding performances in math and science competitions. Woodbury’s team of five young mathematicians placed first in Ohio among 245 public and private schools competing in the 6th grade division of the Ohio Mathematics League. All five placed in the top 10 in individual competition. Members of the state championship team were: Paul Bixenstine (10th place individually); Ryan Hacala (third place individually); Cliff Harding (third place individually); Robert Kaleal (third place individually); and David Pretzer (10th place individually). They were coached by mathematics teacher Betty Hess. ? Woodbury’s Science Olympiad team placed second out of 22 teams in the Northeast Ohio Regional Science Olympiad. Members of the team were: Earnest Bae, Lisa Chen, Samantha Englander, Jasmine Golphin, Ryan Hacala, Owen Hearey, Brett Heeger, Arlo Hill, William Issa, Michael Koler, Joe Lesnefsky, Adam Margolius, Ryan McDonough, Briggs Patterson, Darrell Pitts, Irina Popescu, David Pretzer, Kenneth Priest, Lee Reis, Kelly Schaefer, Ashali Singham, Sara Smith, Samantha Ward, Jessica Wasserman, Flint Whistler, and Meredith Williams. The team was coached by faculty members Donna-Marie Lane, Gayle Mixon, Marie O’Leary-Stark, and Susan Valentine-Paganelli. ? The Middle School’s 7th-grade math team finished first among 234 public and private schools in the Ohio Math League Competition, the state-level version of a national program. The 8th-grade team captured first in the region and fifth place among 238 schools competing at the state level on the Math League. And in Math Counts, a separate competition, the Middle School team placed first among 17 teams in regional competition at Cleveland State University and was one of 40 teams to compete at the state level in Columbus. In addition, several students won individual honors. Members of the state championship 7th-grade Math League team were: Andrew Cooper, fifth in the state individually; Ed Cormany, first in the state individually; Adam Margolius (a Woodbury student who takes math at the Middle School), 14th place in the state individually; Hans Rinderknecht, 14th in the state individually; and Thaddeus Templeton, 14th in the state individually. The No. 5-ranked 8th-grade team consisted of Emily Alpert, 4th in the region individually; Todd Angney, 4th in the region individually; David Margolius, 4th in the region individually; David Simmons-Duffin, 4th in the region individually; and Matthew Smith.The regional champion Math Counts team was made up of Ed Cormany, Sarah Jenks, David Margolius, Hans Rinderknecht, David Simmons-Duffin, and Matthew Smith.All three math squads were coached by Mathematics Department Chair John Federer. ? Robert Price, an 8th grader, has been named the MAP Student of the Year at Shaker Middle School. MAP stands for the Minority Achievement Program, fashioned after the highly successful Minority Achievement Committee (MAC) Program at Shaker Heights High School. Robert attained the highest grade point average among students in the program. Now in its second year of operation, MAP is sponsored by Assistant Principal J. Lindsay Florence. ? The Middle School’s Science Olympiad team finished third in regional competition and fourteenth in the State of Ohio. Congratulations to Shaker Heights High School’s Academic Decathlon Team, which placed fifth among 31 teams at state competition. Competing for Shaker were seniors Erron Combs, Amber Drechsler, Allison Keenan and Jacqueline Munyasya; sophomore Tara Grove; and freshmen Elisabeth Maguda and Allison Nau. Shaker students won 19 individual awards and the top team award in essay writing. Winners of individual awards were: Amber Drechsler, silver medal in math, silver medal in speech, bronze medal in art, gold medal in literature and bronze medal in essay; Allison Nau, gold medal in essay, Allison Keenan, gold medal in essay, gold medal (and perfect score) in interview; Jacqueline Munyasya, silver medal in essay, silver medal in interview; Tara Grove, bronze medal in essay, silver medal in speech; Elisabeth Maguda, silver medal in essay, bronze medal in social studies, gold medal in music, silver medal in art, gold medal in literature, Kent State Book Award, and team’s top score award. The team was coached by English teachers Carol Fox and Steven Fox. ? The Board of Education welcomed two students who are in Shaker Heights through the American Field Service program, and the host families who have opened their homes and hearts to make the exchange possible. They are ?zden Odmon of Turkey, who is staying with the family of Nathan Levitan, Laura Rocker and their daughter Rosa Levitan; and Luciana Moraes of Brazil, who has two host families: Richard and Patricia Burns and their children Kira, Soren & Andrew, and Richard and Carol Bell and daughters Elizabeth and Patricia. ? Hilary Jacqmin is one of just five students in the United States selected to receive the Scholastic Writing Portfolio Scholarship, sponsored by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. The $5,000 scholarship, awarded for a collection of written work, is accompanied by a trip to Washington, D.C., for an awards ceremony, exhibition and reception. Each winning student may invite a teacher who has been particularly influential; Hilary has chosen George Harley of the High School English department. ? Three Shaker seniors won the coveted Achievement Awards in Writing from the National Council of Teachers of English for work they completed as juniors. More than 3,000 students were nominated nationwide, and their entries were judged by a high school teacher and a college professor. The students are Grace Fuller, Celeste Ng, and Jed Wolpaw. Their English teachers last year were George Harley, Ruth Blair, and Carol Fox, respectively. ? Eighth-grader Emily Alpert has won a third-place award in the Power of the Pen state tournament. The award is presented by American Greetings for outstanding individual writing. The Power of the Pen team has already been recognized for its group performance at the regional and district levels. The coaches are teachers Kathy Brewster and Ella Washington. ? The Shaker Bands’ website, created by 9th grader Aaron Greenspan, has received a Best Design Award from the Musicians’ Network. Shaker students performed superbly on the national examination administered by the American Association of Teachers of French. German III students Gillian Boyd, Soren Burns, Lisa Glazer, Lene Haga, and Joy Nims took the National German Exam, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German. Each received a letter of commendation and certificate of superior achievement for scoring at or above the 85th percentile. In addition, Soren Burns and Lisa Glazer qualified for an all-expense-paid trip to Germany for their scores of 90% and above. Soren Burns, with a score of 100%, placed first in the region. ? On the National Spanish Examination, 54 Shaker students scored in the top 15% in the Northern Ohio region in their respective divisions, with several finishing in the top 10. Three Shaker Heights students among this select group won Green Ribbon Awards for their outstanding performance on the demanding test. They are Erron Combs, Daniel Homans, and Ross McDevitt, students of Jane Ulrich. Shaker Heights is one of only four high schools in the state of Ohio that offer Greek. ? Shaker Heights High School students were well represented at the 1998 Scholastic Art Awards – Cuyahoga County Competition, a juried show held at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Briana Hensold, Heather Singerman, and William Stenson won Gold Keys, meaning that their work was automatically sent on to New York where it will be entered in international competition. Carrie Lewine, ?zden Odmon, Matthew Schorgl, Yasmeen Chandler, Giuliana Dole and Isaac Gertman won Silver Keys, the highest local award. Lindsey Wolkin took home three Silver Keys. Honorable Mention recipients included Mark Gurarie, Sarah Glauser, Parashar Ranade, Alder Brannin, ?zden Odmon, Seth Chokel, Halle Safier, Kamilah Butler, Sayaka Fujioka, Rochana Jones, Melanie Pulley, Scott Green, Isaac Gertman, Matthew Schorgl, and Lindsey Wolkin. In addition, Sarah Glauser and Matthew Schorgl had works selected to be shown at the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition in Columbus, running through May 22. James Hoffman is the Art Department head. ? Shaker Heights High School’s Theatre Department introduced a new element into professional development this year: students teaching teachers, through performance. Student troupes performed programs on creating original works of theatre at two professional conferences during the year: the Conference on English Leadership in Detroit and the Ohio Council of Teachers of English Language Arts, held in Beachwood. The performers were Aaron Dibner-Dunlap, Tomesha Elam, Daniel Gatozzi, Andy Geronimo, Preston Goforth, Nora Gordon, Chloe Hill, Erik Johnson, Julie Smolinski, Temar Underwood, and Jason Wright. The theatre arts teachers who helped them shape the program are John Morris and James Thornton. ? Business students at the High School have been making good use of the department’s new computer-equipped lab. They turned in an excellent showing at the Regional Job Skills Competition, dominating the awards in several categories. Among the winners were Tyleah Brown, 2nd place in word processing; Lisa Brooks, 3rd place in job interviewing; Sara Everman, 3rd place in the administrative assistant contest; April Headen, honorable mention in Business English; Shamica Johnson, honorable mention in speed typing; Tiara McPherson, honorable mention in business math; Erika Midgette, 1st place in extemporaneous speaking; Dawn Morris, 2nd place in accounting; Greg Morrison, 3rd place in filing; Mary Payne, 4th place in Business English; and Monica Powell, 2nd in desktop publishing. Their business teacher is Glenda Moss. ? Shaker Middle School 8th grader Lindsay Kocab placed first in the state in the History Day Competition. Lindsay’s individual project on the theme of migration centered around the story of Dr. Samuel Mathews; she will advance to the National History Day competition next month. Her social studies teacher is David Lawrence, Department Chair. ? Devony Jackson and Najah Farley will represent Ohio high schools at National History Day in Washington, D.C., in June. The Shaker Heights High School duo won the regional and state competitions in the group performance category for their dramatic musical portrayal of the migration of African musical roots to African-American slave songs. Their history teacher is Timothy Mitchell. At the regional level, Meredith Sorin won 1st place and Marc Wood won 2nd in the research paper category. Melissa Koch and Kate Goheen, under the guidance of teachers Rhona Pessel and Terry Pollack, took 3rd place in the group project category. ? Several musicians from Shaker Heights High School have been selected to perform with elite groups in the Cleveland area.
