To: CoSTEM@From: [Your name/email address]Date: [Your submission date]Re: [Individual/Organization]: STEM RFI Response On behalf of our teachers and students I think it would be in our best national interest to only teach metric system units in our schools.Among the reasons:High-paying jobsSome of the highest-paying jobs (science and medicine) routinely require use of metric units, yet Common Core standards—used by the majority of states and territories—still recommend teaching both metric and U.S. customary units side by side for four years.Your own “Grant Proposal Guide” stipulates:The Metric Conversion Act of 1975, as amended, and Executive Order 12770 of 1991 encourage Federal agencies to use the Metric System (SI) in procurement, grants and other business-related activities. Proposers are encouraged to use the Metric System of weights and measures in proposals submitted to the Foundation. Grantees are also encouraged to use metric units in reports, publications and correspondence relating to proposals and awards. that it does not request metric and U.S. customary units—just metric units. It’s time we promoted more consistency within our country.Ease of learningMetric units are much easier to learn than U.S. customary units, thus saving teachers’ and students’ time and resources for more important mathematical concepts. See the illustration below that shows this is just part of the problem since it only captures volumetric units—not distance. (Image from )Failing math scores compared to other countriesOur math and science scores are subpar when compared to other countries according to the latest Programme for International Student Assessment that was released on 12/2019. (Image adapted by milebehind.)Our country is a measurement dinosaurMetric units are almost universals standards used by 95 percent of the world. Our country is holding us back with a clumsy collection of units from many times and places while the elegance and simplicity of the modern metric system is far superior. This makes us a measurement dinosaur when we don’t have to be.People are dying in this country because we don’t use the metric systemOur constant use of dual units (U.S. customary and metric units) leads to medication errors. One can only wonder how many children were affected by the cited mistake before the error was caught. (See below) (Source: )There are countless other reasons but I hope these are enough to consider these facts as you move forward.Thank you for your request for comments.Sincerely,[Your name] ................
