Obits from Mary Taylor or Sue in Fresno

Obits from Mary Taylor or Sue in Fresno

I am sending you all the obits I have for 1966, I see a few that you don't have.  I will also attach a file with all the teacher obits that I have collected so far, use any or all that you want.

Recently I was asked by an older grad if I had or could get old grammar school photos.  I did a big search of sources and found that the PG Library does not have any, nor does the Heritage Society. The superintendent of schools says they do not have a master archive of such things. The only source is the librarian at Robert H. Down (and presumably the other librarians of the other schools). So I contacted RHD lady, Beverly, and after a few thousand e-mail she got back to me and we exchanges queries - did she have the photos, could I get copies, and who was I and what did I plan of using them for.  She seemed ameniable to sending me some or possibly all electronically, once they were all scanned and input into her computer. She hoped that sometime later this year that would be done and I should get back to her then.  I told her I would, that I would like to see copies put on disk and given to the library and the heritage society (and me) and she seemed okay with that, but nothing is nailed down yet.  Nor costs discussed, so we will see. I will keep you posted, if I can get my hand on any that you would like I will get them to you.  So that was fun.

I am keeping busy with my obits of PGHS project.  I seem to find a few every month, and it seems alot of folks are dying lately, we had over 20 obits for the latest obit (you are a member right?).  I am looking forward to next yearly reunion in October, it's at the Hyatt this year, and they are hoping for a record turnout with dinner and dancing.

Oh, I just talked to Mike Vernon '66 on the phone this week, he has been getting over a serious illness and is feeling much better. He took up the guitar a few years ago and has become quite accomplished. He plans on going to PG Old days celebration, so keep an eye out for him it you are there too.  His phone number is 831-728-1774.  I keep urging hime to contact you or other grads and he says yah, yah, but is a real slug - like lots of us I guess. I barely know anyone in my class these days.

talk to you later, Sue in Fresno '68

1966 Douglas William Pitter (58)

Press Democrat on 1/5/2005

PITTER, Douglas Born January 17, 1946 in Salinas, died December 31, 2004 following open heart surgery. Doug was a loving and devoted husband of 33 years to Carol Pitter and a long time teacher to thousands of children in the Twin Hills District of Sebastopol, where he taught for 31 years. He began his teaching career at Apple Blossom Elementary School and at the time of his death was a high school teacher in the Orchard View home school program. He spent most of his career working with middle students (hundreds of whom had been given unique Pitter nicknames) at Twin Hills Middle School teaching math and computers, where he also coached volleyball, football and supervised countless field trips. He helped start the now successful Empire Volleyball club which provides athletic opportunities for young women in West County. He loved attending high school sporting events to support former students. Kids and parents came to expect his presence at basketball, baseball, soccer and volleyball games. He was a lover of good food, good movies and good books, roller coasters and Corgi dogs. A gourmet cook, a romantic traveler, a restaurant and destination connoisseur, Doug was also an accomplished handyman and advisor, who could simply fix and solve any problem, from how to reach a difficult kid to how to set a rock wall. He was a techie in the true sense of the word, teaching computers to students, running the sound system for concerts and mastering the newest technologies as they appeared. He had a booming voice that could quiet a gymnasium of unruly middle schoolers, but could also bring beauty and joy to an audience as a member of the Santa Rosa Symphonic Chorus. Doug was active as a volunteer for Habitats for Humanity and gave freely of his time to help families in need all over West County. Doug Pitter was maybe the last of the true renaissance men in that he would tackle any task and then master whatever he tried. We were blessed to have his love and light for 57 years, and the world was a better place when he was in it. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, January 8 at 10:00 a.m. in the Twin Hills Middle School gymnasium. A reception will follow the service at the Gold Ridge Fire Department across the street from Twin Hills. A scholarship fund has been set up in his name for Twin Hills students who graduate from West County High schools. Contributions may be sent to: Twin Hills Teacher's Association Scholarship Fund, c/o Nicole Ramondo, 700 Watertrough Rd., Sebastopol, CA 95472.

James Popkey was a gourmet chef, expert ceramicist, master beer-maker, adept fisherman, pro-quality photographer, green-thumb gardener... Was there anything this guy couldn't do? James at our 1986 high school reunion. The host of many memorable feasts, James had a wry sense of humor, and was the life of quite a few parties in the old days. I can remember plenty of great and/or hilarious moments at the Palo Colorado Canyon complex and elsewhere. Pretty much all of them, though, would compromise this website's "PG" rating so I can't go into them here.

Big George Taylor drove his '57 Chevy from a huge easy chair. He took out the bench seat, which wasn't comfortable enough for his 6' 4" 350 lbs+ frame. A couple of George stories... One day, George lost his glasses. To see, he utilized the "pinhole principle" by putting paper into empty eyeglass frames and slitting each piece of paper down the middle. This must have worked because he drove all over the Monterey Peninsula this way. But to observers, it looked as though this enormous long-haired fellow had deliberately blanked out his eyes and was driving blind. Another time, George, sound asleep on the couch at Holly Street, sat up and said to me: "McPartland, there are three places in the machine where it's illegal to be, and you're in one of them". I asked: "George, are you awake?" He answered: "No" and flopped back down, still sound asleep. George with Colleen Popkey's son Frayne Padgham in Palo Colorado Canyon in the late 1970s. He wrote poetry, philosophized at length, and was a big-hearted, sensitive guy. We all miss George. (Photo from Jim Popkey Photo Archive)

1966 Richard Ronald Vining (34)

Monterey Peninsula Herald Sep 1982

Despondency Over Arrest May have Triggered Deaths

The murder-suicide of a Concord man and his seven-year-old son was apparently triggered by the man's despondency over a recent arrest, according to sheriff's deputies, who said a note was left where the bodies were found Thursday morning. The bodies of Richard Ronald Vining, 34, of Concord, and his son, Jeremiah Alexander Vining, were found in the back of a camper truck at about 1 p.m. Thursday by two men three miles east of Highway 1 at Garrapata Creek, about 10 miles south of Carmel, deputies said. According to deputies, Vining had driven to a family cabin on Garrapata Creek Tuesday night. He and the boy went to sleep in the back of the camper Wednesday night after Vining had rigged a hose from the engine exhaust of the truck to the camper and left the motor running. Contra Costa County Sheriff's deputies Friday refused to release information concerning Vining's previous arrest. The two bodies were taken to the Paul Mortuary in Pacific Grove where private memorial services and cremation are pending. Richard Vining was born Dec. 2, 1947, in Carmel, and had been a contractor and in the construction business for the past 14 years. He lived in Concord the past four years. He grew up in Pacific Grove, attended Pacific Grove High School, and was a Navy veteran. He is survived by his wife, Karen; parents, Ronald and Selma of Pacific Grove; brothers, David of Marina and Robert and Walter, both of Pacific Grove; sisters, Dorothy, Bonnie and Heidi Vining, Sharon Pashin and Christine Glasby, all of Pacific Grove and his stepson, Donnie Quist of Concord.
