4-H Council Meeting

The next 4-H Council meeting will be held Monday, April 24th in the courthouse meeting room at 7:00 p.m.

4-H Ambassador Meeting

The Morris County 4-H Ambassadors will meet on Monday, April 24th in the courthouse meeting room following the 4-H Council meeting.

Cloverbud Meeting

The next Cloverbud Meeting will be on April 9th from 3-4 pm and be held in the Meeting Room in the Courthouse.

Cat Project Meeting

A county cat project meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 13, 6 pm at the Council Grove Baptist Church. Please bring a cat food bag, can or label. We will discuss how to read nutrition labels, the proper feline diet, and how to body condition score a cat.

Morris County 4-H Club Day

Congratulations to all the 4-Hers who participated in Morris County 4-H Club Day! There were some awesome entries. Thank you to the Club Day Committee and all who helped with setup and cleanup, monitored rooms, and donated cookies!!

Big John Award

The Flint Hills 4-H Club is the winner of the Big John award for the 2017 4-H Club Day. The recipient of the Big John award is determined each year, based on a rubric, by the results of 4-H Club Day and the number of club members who participate. A plaque is updated each year and displayed in the Extension Office with the winning club. Congratulations, Flint Hills!

Archery Project

4-Hers enrolled in the Archery project have the opportunity to participate in a fundraiser to benefit the Archery project.  4-Hers are needed April 1 from 3:30 to 6:30 pm at the Prairie Heights Elementary School to assist with their PTO Carnival.  The PTO is willing to make a donation to the Archery project in exchange for this assistance.  Any 4-Hers who can help are asked to contact James Fetters at 620-767-2800.

Stack up against hunger!

The Morris County 4-H Ambassadors collected 52 cans of food at their canned food drive at Club Days! Thanks to those who participated.

Beef Weigh-In

Beef Weigh-In will be held on April 8th, from 8a.m. to 9a.m. at Derek Schrader’s (16875 K177, Alta Vista).

Small Animal Weigh-In

April 30th from 4p.m.-5:30p.m. will be Small Animal Weigh-In at the Fairgrounds. Small animals include (sheep, goats, swine, and bucket calf). Tagging for hogs will be the same as last year. (You may pick up tags in the Extension office, tag the hog, then send a picture of that animal showing the tag in ear by email to bammerlin@ksu.edu)

Morris County 4-H Foundation

Anniversary Celebration

Celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Morris County 4-H Foundation sponsoring activities of 4-H club members is planned Friday evening, April 7, at 7 o’clock, in the fairgrounds community building.

All persons interested in the Morris County 4-H program have been extended an invitation to attend the evening supper program.

Top 4-H Club Day numbers will be presented, along with a review of assistance the foundation has provided 4-H members through the years.

Supported strictly by member donations, the Morris County 4-H Foundation has provided help for more than 2,000 4-H members to participate in special 4-H activities.

A total of $37,225 has been given in 103 Morris County 4-H Foundation Scholarships to 4-H club members.

Anniversary supper celebration reservations of $11 per meal, with checks payable to the Morris County 4-H Foundation, should be mailed by March 29th to Connie Burton, 1867 C Avenue, White City KS 66872.

The Tri-County Free Fair King and Queen

Tri-County Free Fair is July 6-8th. All bonafide 4-H or FFA members 9-12 grades (including new grads) may compete in the King/Queen contest. For application and more information please contact the Extension Office. All applications and application materials are due by May 15th.

K-State Animal Sciences

Leadership Academy

Applications are now being accepted for the 2017 K-State Animal Sciences Leadership Academy. This intensive four-day educational experience is designed to enhance the leadership skills and animal science knowledge of students in 9th through 12th grades. The academy is being hosted by the K-State Department of Animal Sciences and Industry and sponsored by the Livestock and Meat Industry Council. There will be two sessions offered this year and are scheduled for June 14-17 in Manhattan. Additional information and applications are available in the Extension Office. The application deadline is April 1st.  

Livestock Judging Camps

The KSU “Champions” Livestock Judging Camp is a three day, intense judging camp designed for 4-H and FFA members, ages 14-18, who are seriously interested in enhancing their livestock judging and oral communication skills.  Prior livestock judging experience is necessary for this camp.  Workouts will be conducted similar to those at a collegiate level. Mini camps will be conducted in June. Each camp will be limited to 35 students and will be accepted on a “first come-first serve” basis. The following dates are set for the 2017 camps. June 7-9, June 12-14, June 16-18. Registration forms and more information are available in the Extension Office. Registration and payment is due by May 22.

Morris County Fair

The Morris County Fair will be July 22-July 31. The dog show will be held on Saturday, July 22nd at 9 a.m. and the Hand/Pet show will be on Wednesday, July 26th at 10 a.m. Cat show will follow hand/pet show at 10:30 a.m. — These are the correct times and dates, do not use the dates that were put in March newsletter. Sorry about confusion. The fair schedule for this year will be attached to newsletter.

Sunny Hills 4-H Camp

The 2017 camp dates are June 24-27 at Rock Springs Ranch 4-H Center. Camp is open to 4-Hers who have completed 3rd through 7th grade. Registration is due on May 19th. Cost is $200. The Morris County 4-H Foundation will provide $145 of support. As a result, the camp registration cost for a Morris County 4-Her is just $55 instead of the full registration fee of $200. This year shirts are not included in the price. If wishing to purchase a shirt please add $5.50 to the cost. Registration forms are available in Extension Office and are attached to this newsletter.

Camp Counselor

Camp Counselor Applications will be available in the Extension office April 5th.

Tri County Fair

This year’s Tri County Fair will be on July 6th, 7th, and 8th. The only major change this year, the horse show will be moved to Thursday, July 6th at 8:30 am.

Jackson County Spring Dog Show

This year Jackson County Spring Dog Show will be on Saturday, April 15th at in Holton, KS. Check in is at 7:30 am and the show will start at 8:30 am. More information and entry form can be found in Extension Office.

Morris County 4-H

Foundation Scholarships

Once again the Morris County 4-H Foundation is offering scholarships to present or past Morris County 4-H members. Also, please note that students can apply and receive the scholarship twice. Applications are available in the Extension Office, on our website, or from your school counselor. The application deadline is May 1st.

Discovery Days

Discovery Days will be held May 30 - June 2, 2017 on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan. This mini college experience is designed for youth who are 13-18 years of age as of January 1, 2017. The theme this year is “Make A Splash.” Participants will have the opportunity to select classes, attend social functions, and be a part of community service opportunities. Registration cost is $230. Additional classes cost extra. Online registration is now open and can be found by visiting or by contacting the Extension Office. The registration and payment deadline is April 20th.

4-H College and Career Day

This year’s 4-H College and Career Day will be held at Dodge City Community College in Dodge City, KS. It will be held on April 20th with registration starting at 11:30 a.m. College and Career Day is focused on the youth audience from 6th-12th grade, but any family members are welcome to attend. Vanier Family Scholarship Program

The Vanier Family Scholarship Program was established to enhance the strong leadership skills already exhibited by 4-H members. This program invests in the educational endeavors of young people who have overcome challenges in their lives to pursue their educational goals. Scholarship recipients will be recognized leaders and role models within their home communities who have balanced “greater than usual” demands and contributed in positive ways as a 4-H member and citizen. 

 

Students will receive scholarships in the amount of $7,000/year for use at community or technical institutions and $12,000/year for use at baccalaureate institutions. Recipients will receive half of the scholarship for the fall semester and the remaining half in the spring.

 

ELIGIBILITY (New for 2017-18 applicants): 

• Current or former Kansas 4-H member for 3 or more years 

• Entering college for the first time as a full-time undergraduate student for the 2017-18 academic year (Exception: 2016-17 renewal applicants) 

• Plans to enroll full-time in an accredited post-secondary institution for the 2017-18 academic year 

• Extensive 4-H leadership at the local and county levels and/or Key Award winner 

• Demonstrated problem-solving and leadership capabilities 

 

**2016-2017 Vanier Family Scholarship Recipients should follow the information that was emailed to them concerning the process for renewal and how to reapply for 2017-2018. **

 ONLINE APPLICATION AND INTERVIEW PROCESS: 

• Applications and references must be received by Friday, March 31, 2017 by midnight Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. 

• Finalists will be notified via email by May 1, 2017 and will participate in virtual interviews.

• Virtual Interviews will be conducted May 3-5, 2017. 

• Please do not call the State 4-H Office to confirm receipt of application or references.  You will receive a confirmation page after you have submitted your scholarship, reference information will not be given out, please confirm submission with your references. 

• Notification of advancement in selection process requires response within 24 hours or applicant will be removed from consideration.

2017 Kansas 4-H

Sportfishing Tournament

The Kansas Sportfishing Tournament is open to all 4-H Members, you do not have to be enrolled in the sport fishing project to participate. The contest runs throughout the year and ends September 15, 2017. Anglers can fish year round but entries must be in by the deadline, fish caught after the deadline may be entered in the next contest. One 4H Angler of the Year will be named in each of the fish species commonly found in Kansas waters. Each Angler of the Year will receive a 4H Sportfishing cap and a Wal-Mart gift card. All participants that enter a certified entry will receive a 4H Sportfishing cap. More information and entry form are available in the Extension Office.

4-H Campference

Campference is for 12-14 year old youth (before January 1, 2017). Campference will be held at Rock Springs 4-H Center, June 27-30. Participants will experience the feel of a conference, while enjoying the "camp" activities Rock Springs 4-H Center has to offer. Campference will feature workshops about opportunities in the 4-H program, becoming a leader and activities to energize youth while learning healthy living skills and how to better interact with others. Kansas 4-H Sewing Camp

The 2017 Kansas 4-H Sewing Camp will be held May 30th through June 2nd in Justin Hall on the K-State Campus in Manhattan. The camp is open to youth who have sewing experience between the ages of 13 and 18. The cost to attend is $215. Additional information can be found at or in the Extension Office. The registration and payment deadline is April 15th.

Gary Fuller Spring Classic

Spring Classic will be on May 6th & 7th at the Lyon County Fairgrounds in Emporia. Entries are due April 28th. Registration forms and more information are available in the Extension Office.

Cowley County Beef Show

Beef Classic -Saturday April 29th, at the Winfield Fairgrounds, Winfield KS. All entries must be checked in by 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 29th. More information can be found at: cowley.ksu.edu

Coffey County Spring

Beef, Sheep, & Goat Shows

Coffey County Spring Shows will be located in Burlington Kansas at the Coffey County Fairgrounds on Saturday, April 29th. Pre Entries are required by April 17th. Entry forms and rules are available in Extension Office. Payment is due on the day of the show. Entry fee is $20 per animal if animals are NOT pre-entered, $10 per animal if animals are pre-entered.

World Food Prize

Kansas Youth Institute (KYI)

KSU college of Agriculture is hosting the 4th annual KYI on Thursday, April 20th. The institute is an opportunity for high school students to join the conversation about feeding the world. Students and their teachers are invited to KSU to interact with agricultural experts and distinguished guests, discuss global food security issues, and participate in experiential learning sessions in the College of Agriculture. Wild Bill Beef Shoot-Out

Wild Bill Beef Shoot-out hosted by the beef show committee of the Dickinson County 4-H Council will be Saturday, April 1st at the Central Kansas Free Fairgrounds in Abilene, KS. Entries due by March 24th. Registration and more information are available in the Extension office or online at:



Hutchinson Community College

Livestock Judging Classic

This year’s Hutchinson Community College Livestock Judging Classic will be held on Thursday, April 13th in the Expo Arena at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, Kansas. Registration will be from 7:30 am- 8:30 am with the contest starting at 8:45 am. All entries are due by April 11th via email to Ben Williams – williamsb@hutchcc.edu . If you are interested in this event please let Allicia know in the Office and she will e mail you the entry form. Cost is $10 per contestant with lunch provided.

Sheep & Goat Showmanship Clinic

Hands on learning experience to improve your sheep and goat showmanship skills. Clinic will be on Saturday, June 17th from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Located at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds in Tonganoxie, KS. Registration cost is $60. Registration is due by May 15th. Information and registration forms are located in Extension Office.

Central Kansas Classic

Central Kansas Classic is going to be held on Saturday, April 8th at the Saline County Expo Center in Salina, KS. Schedule, rules, and entry form are located in Extension Office.

Cherokee County Livestock

Expo and Showdown

Both the Beef livestock expo and the sheep and goat showdown are going to be held on May 13th in Pittsburg, KS. Entries are due by May 6th. Entry forms are located in Extension Office.

Wabaunsee County Spring

Livestock Day

Wabaunsee Spring Livestock Day is going to be held on Saturday, April 29th in Alma, KS at the Wabaunsee County Fairgrounds. Pre- entries are due April 24th. Rules and registration forms are in Extension Office.

Shawnee County Spring Livestock Show – May 6th

Exhibitors may only show beef, sheep, or meat goats that have been owned and tagged by May 6th, 2017.

4H Dog Show

Shawnee County Dog Show will be held on April 1st. It is located in the Ag Hall at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, KS. Show will start at 9am. All registrations must be in by March 24th. Entry fee is $6 per dog per event. Late registration and walk-in registrations will be subject to a $5 per participant/dog team. More information can be found in Extension Office

Raise Your Hand Campaign

The national Raise Your Hand campaign will provide an easy way for proud Kansas 4-H alumni to reconnect with the national and state 4-H program in new and exciting ways.

 

Kansas is committed to connecting with as many of the state’s estimated 200,000 4-H alumni as possible during the campaign. Only in Kansas will the generous partner, Stanion Wholesale Electric, Co., donate $2 for each “hand raised” who registers (up to $10,000). In addition, Kansas will be competing for a $20,000 1st place prize through the national registration challenge – that means you can help Kansas raise up to $30,000 by registering! The Raise Your Hand campaign runs March 1 – June 30, 2017.
