Second District New Dentist ReceptionDr. Sajid shared that the requested speaker honorarium for the previously recommended speaker is higher than what was budgeted. Dr. Sajid directed committee members to share ideas for potential speakers and CE topics with staff (01/18NDCDA1).Dr. Nielubowicz suggested holding the reception in the King of Prussia area as it is centrally located within the district. Staff is contacting the venues suggested by Dr. Nielubowicz.Dr. Thakkar suggested the food should be available for the duration of the event. The event will begin at 7 p.m. and will include appetizers, drinks and an opportunity for networking. Between 7:45-8:00 p.m., attendees will be seated for the continuing education portion of the event. Food will continue to be available during the continuing education portion for any latecomers. Dr. Sajid directed staff to move forward with scheduling the event on Thursday, May 31 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. (01/18NDCDA2). New Dentist BlogThe New Dentist Blog launched on SoNet on January 15, 2018. Committee members have submitted four of the anticipated six initial blog topics. In order to maintain the monthly posting schedule, Dr. Khan and Dr. Taylor volunteered to write the two remaining blog posts and will forward their completed drafts to staff by March 9 (01/18NDCDA3). Dr. Sajid directed staff to post a SoNet thread for next six topics prior to the March meeting (01/18NDCDA4). In order to avoid repetition, staff will list all topics that have already been utilized. Committee members are encouraged to share topic ideas on the SoNet thread, and will volunteer to write for the topics during the March meeting. Completed drafts are due by Friday, June 1. Consider PA! mailing incentivesCommittee members discussed potential incentives to include with Consider PA! booklets that would be mailed to all D4 students across the country. The committee wants to include an incentive with the booklets as a way to track the success of the mailing. Committee members were reminded the booklet would be mailed to all D4s, including D4s who might not ultimately practice in mittee members initially discussed including a rebate on dues for the first year of membership, but noted that members already receive complimentary membership with PDA for the first year. They discussed offering the dues rebate for the second year of membership instead. In addition to tracking the success of the mailing, committee members believe offering a rebate could aid in member retention. Another potential incentive the committee discussed is to include a post card with the booklets. The post card could list membership benefits, and students would be able to check off the benefits they find most appealing. The students would then mail the post cards back to PDA. In addition to tracking the success of the mailing, this would also provide committee members with insight into which benefits resonate most with students. Dr. Khan pointed out that many D4s may be in the process of moving, finding a job, or applying for residency, and might feel that returning a post card is inconvenient. Dr. Sajid suggested combining the post card and rebate incentives. The post card would allow students to indicate which member benefits they find most appealing, and also receive a rebate on their dues by mailing it to PDA. Only students who filled out the post card and returned it to PDA would be eligible for a rebate in the second year of their PDA membership dues. Dr. Tauberg said he would share this idea with the BOT. If the committee pursues this project, it would tentatively be included in the 2019 NDC budget. PDA Voting ProcessThe BOT has directed the NDC to discuss ideas or strategies to improve the participation of new dentists in the PDA voting process. In 2017, approximately 8% (or 54/686) of voters were between the ages of 25-35. The 2018 voting process will take place during the last two weeks of February. Due to timing, committee members were reminded that any ideas or strategies would apply to next year’s voting process, 2019.Staff confirmed that each candidate’s bio is posted on the PDA website prior to voting. Links to the bios, along with instructions on how to vote, are sent to all members via email. Dr. Thakkar inquired if an incentive could be offered to first-time voters. While committee members believe offering an incentive could a good idea, they also acknowledge that first-time voters could include established dentists as well as new dentists. Dr. Tauberg will discuss this with the BOT during the January meeting will follow up with Dr. Sajid and staff via email. Staff was directed to include a follow-up discussion on new dentist participation in the PDA voting process on the July meeting agenda (01/18NDCDA5). ADA Annual Conference on MembershipThe NDC budget has funding available for one committee member to attend the ADA Annual Conference on Membership, from April 18 – April 20, 2018 in Chicago. Dr. Sarah Khan expressed an interest in attending the conference. Staff was directed to forward information about the conference to Dr. Khan (01/18NDCDA6).
