Abstract

Lyndon Baines Johnson assembled a crew of historians and political scientists to assist him in writing his presidential memoirs; chief among these assistants was Doris Kearns Goodwin. Johnson wanted his memoir to be interpreted as scholarship and not dismissed as a quaint anecdote. On the opposite side of the spectrum Ronald Wilson Reagan was assisted by ghost writers to produce a presidential memoir which appealed to the popular public audience. The titles of each work suggest the president’s intentions; Johnson’s Vantage Point: Perspectives of The Presidency as compared to Reagan’s An American Life. From Harry Truman’s two volumes of memoir published in 1955 and 1956 to George Walker Bush’s memoir published in 2010; every president has written an account of their experience in the executive branch of government (There have been two exceptions: John F. Kennedy and George Herbert Walker Bush). What has been the intended audience for presidential memoir? Have presidents written for historians or for popular history? How should historians utilize presidential memoir when writing presidential history? What impact does “popular” presidential memoir have on serious historical scholarship on the presidency? What role do historians play in popular history regarding presidential memoir? This will be an informal presentation provoking questions and discussion from the audience centering on an analysis of presidential memoirs and their place in popular history.
