Mathew Brady’s Civil War PhotographyPhotography is constantly evolving. Just a few years ago, Lomography was all the rage; everyone proudly displayed their Diana or Holga around their neck and posted their light-leak filled prints on Facebook. Then, Instagram came out and digitized the whole process. Oddly enough, as photography advances, it seems throwback photography, with its expired film and its heavy use of filters, becomes more popular. All of this making light of “old-timey” photographs might make one lose sight of just how revolutionary photography was when it was invented less than 200 years ago. After photography was developed in the 1820s, it was soon used to capture scenes of war. The American Civil War was the fourth war to be caught on film, in large part due to the efforts of Mathew Brady. Brady is considered the father of photojournalism, and his work served as a turning point in the history of photography. Due to the efforts of Brady and other photographers of the time, the American Civil War is the best documented 19th-century war in terms of photography.
