THE MONG LINE OF DECENDENCY---------

--------------------------------------THE MONG LINE OF DECENDENCY----------------------------------------------------------------AS RESEARCHED AND WRITTEN BY BURDETT M. MONG-------------------------

NARRATIVE INFORMATION: GOTTFRIED MONG AND MARIA BARBARA JEARANG

Gottfried Mong arrived in the USA on 03 September 1739 in Philadelphia aboard the ship "Loyal Judith", commanded by Edward Painter. From Rotterdam, it last sailed from (???? Deal ??? unreadable copy) with 315 passengers. [There is a Deal, England on the coast at the narrowest point of the Strait of Dover (10 miles NE from Dover) which would have been enroute from Rotterdam. Did it have a harbor?? With this being an enroute stop, all Continental passengers would have boarded at Rotterdam.]

Gottfried is believed to have settled at Smithsburg (then Frederick County/now Washington Co.), Maryland. NOTE: In 1776 all Frederick County West of the Crest of Maryland's Blue Ridge Mountains became Washington County. Smithsburg is West of the Mountain Crest.

I believe Gottfried's house was at Smithsburg, 8 or 10 miles East of Hagerstown, (in Frederick Co. until 1776 when Washington Co. was created). The crest of Maryland's Blue Ridge Mountains form the East county line of Washington Co. on present day maps.

Jacob and Frederick Roarer were executors of Gottfried's estate, and in 1819 Elizabeth Rohrer bought the old Mong house at Smithsburg. Elizabeth had a son named Joseph FUNK Rohrer. Washington Co., Maryland records show Peter Mong married Susannah FUNK, 18 Dec 1804. Elizabeth may have been her mother, or sister.

(1986 entry) The County map of Washington County, Maryland still shows a short mile or so road designated "MONG ROAD" in the extreme NE point of Washington Co. Smithsburg, Maryland population in the 1985 census was 833 people. Funkstown is 6 miles SW from Smithsburg.

Catharine is the only child mentioned by name in the will which was signed on 29 March 1750, although others and a wife are mentioned, but not by name.

From information from Miss Orral Frank, 316 Riddle Avenue, Ravenna, Ohio,

1) DeWalt Mong, Son of Gottfried Mong was born in 1746.

He died on 29 April 1801 in Washington County, Maryland.

2) George Nicholas Mong may have also been a son of Gottfried Mong.

3) Gottfried Mong's Father was Theobald Mong. They were both

weavers by trade in Trippstadt, Palatinate.

TRIPPSTADT is a village five and one-half miles south by a little east of KAISERSLAUTERN, RHEINLAND-PFALZ in the southwestern part of West Germany. It is roughly thirty miles S.W. of WORMS, where beyond any doubt the MONG emigrants got passage on a Rhine riverboat to Rotterdam, The Netherlands, where they embarked for America.

Rheinland-Pfalz is the Palatinate (Lower) of the old records. So many German emigrants came from this area that it was common in early days to call ALL German emigrants PALANTINES, especially in Pennsylvania, where many Germans from the High Plateaus of Southern Germany (Rheinland - Palatinate, Hesse, Baden-Weurtenberg, Baveria) settled in the area around Lancaster County.

These early "German" settlers evolved the "Kentucky Rifle", among many other things. Rheinland-Pfalz is given on most English maps as Rhineland-Palatinate.

Trippstadt is listed by Charles M. Hall in his Vol. 2 of "Atlantic Bridges to Germany" as a "non-community ("non-gemeinde"). This may mean that it no longer exists as a village. Its location would be 7-degrees 45-minutes East Longitude and 48-degrees 20-minutes North Latitude. Church records from the year 1698 are known to exist. Its location should be known to most people of Kaiserslautern.
