WELCOME TO AP WORLD HISTORY!!! THIS IS A COLLEGE LEVEL COURSE. It requires outside preparation and much reading in order to benefit most from classroom instruction and discussion. You will be encouraged to take the AP World History exam on Thursday, May 14, 2015. If you score high enough you can receive college credit. We will discuss the exam throughout the year.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course attempts to provide a critical understanding of history by confronting certain fundamental questions about history. This course covers major events and trends in World History from 8000 BCE to approximately the year 2012 CE. This course follows the course outline from the AP College Board, the governing body that regulates AP courses. We will be reading, discussing, and analyzing primary source documents, some of which may be controversial. However, this is a college level class and you need to be exposed to all types of documents and artwork. Please feel comfortable in discussing any feelings or concerns with me.

GRADES: DAILY-30% (includes class work, homework, quizzes, class discussion, and other items I decide)

MAJOR-70% (includes tests, projects, and other items I decide)

**YOU WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EARN EXTRA POINTS IN HERE

BUT THERE IS NO EXTRA CREDIT IN THIS CLASS.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

1. RESPECT: I hold this quality at the highest of expectations in my classroom. In order for this classroom to be as successful as possible, we all must respect one another. I, as your teacher, will show you the same respect I expect to be shown. Students will be expected to be respectful to everyone and everything in my classroom. This includes but is not limited to other students, the teacher, school property, school rules, other adults on campus, and themselves.

2. PREPARATION: This includes being on time to class with your appropriate materials and assigned work. I also expect students to come to class prepared to participate in the lesson.

3. HONESTY AND INTEGRITY: I have a NO TOLERANCE policy on cheating or plagiarism. If a student is caught cheating on any assignment, the student(s) will receive a zero on the assignment and the parent(s) will be notified of the situation by phone. REMEMBER: Your integrity is one of your most prized possessions, and it is not worth compromising over a few extra points.

4. 100% EFFORT: As your teacher, I give 100% to teaching and preparing you in the classroom to the best of my ability; therefore, I expect the same from you. Come to class prepared and to participate. I want an open, interactive classroom where we can discuss and investigate history together. This includes completing assigned reading BEFORE class so that you can actively participate in discussion and activities, as well as contributing during group work assignments.

RETAKE POLICY: Students may retake one major grade a 6 weeks grading period if they receive less than a 75. In order to qualify for the retake, students must:

• Attend a tutorial session to review material. Tutorials are the 2nd part of lunch or by appt.

if that time is not convenient.

• Complete all related or missing assignments.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES: ALL WESTSIDE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES WILL BE FOLLOWED AND ENFORCED IN THE CLASSROOM.

1. Be on time and in your seat when the tardy bell rings.

2. Put your backpack UNDER you chair. Keep the aisles clear of items.

3. Follow the rules posted above the door.

4. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK IN CLASS. DONT’ LET ME SEE YOU CHEWING GUM.

5. Keep all work unless I tell you to throw it away.

6. Ask and answer questions by raising your hand and being recognized.

7. Follow instructions carefully. I will get you organized, but IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to remain organized.

8. LATE WORK will be accepted NO LATER than two class periods after the due date. Once work is returned you can no longer hand in that assignment for a grade. No long term assignment (a project) can be turned in late. A long term assignment allows you more that 7 days to complete it.

9. Take care of all errands, including the restroom, before coming to class. Of course, there are always restroom emergencies and we will discuss the policy in class.

10. During class time remain seated during instruction and discussion. Sharpen your pencil at the beginning of the period and throw paper away at the end. I prefer if you use pen.

11. ABSENCES: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up all missed work.

• MAKE-UP FOLDER: Upon returning to class after an absence, your assignment(s) will be in your class period’s Make-Up Folder on the table in front of the room. Work needs to be completed within 3 days. You are responsible for any notes you missed, so find a classmate who takes good notes.

• MISSED TESTS: All missed tests/quizzes must be made up within one week of your return to school. This will protect you from getting too far behind. You can go this in the morning, at lunch, or after school.

12. BEGINNING PROCEDURES:

• Copy the Learning Target(Objective) and pre-assess your knowledge. Copy your homework assignment. After that, look at the JOURNAL. Copy the date, the question, and answer it in 3-5 intelligent, descriptive, informative sentences. THE JOURNAL IS GRADED AFTER EVERY 5 JOURNAL ENTRIES. After the Learning Target is completed, post-assess your knowledge and give 1-2 facts proving that you learned the information.

13. ELECTRONIC DEVICES: NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES SHOULD BE VISIBLE WITHOUT TEACHER APPROVAL.

MY GOAL IS TO PREPARE YOU FOR THE AP WORLD HISTORY EXAM ON MAY 14, 2015. THIS WILL INVOLVE READING, WRITING, CRITICAL THINKING, ANALYSIS, AND HAVING SOME ENJOYING ACTIVITIES ALONG THE WAY.

THIS WILL BE A GREAT CLASS BECAUSE YOU ARE IN THE CLASS!!
