2016 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination Results Released

More than 68,100 candidates of the 2016 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) will receive their results notices tomorrow (13 July) from the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA).

A total of 57,127 school candidates from 494 participating schools and 11,001 private candidates entered the HKDSE this year. The number of all candidates has decreased by 8% from last year.

Over 86% of day school candidates registered for two to three elective subjects in addition to the four core subjects, namely Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics and Liberal Studies.

This year, a total of 39,000 day school candidates obtained level 2 or above in five subjects including Chinese Language and English Language. This represents 71.2% of day school candidates, an increase of 1.7% as compared to last year. These candidates are eligible to apply for sub-degree courses and relevant civil service posts.

The percentage of day school candidates who have met the general entrance requirements for local undergraduate university programmes is 42.2%, which has risen by 1.9% as compared to last year. These 23,611 day school candidates obtained level 3 or above in both Chinese Language and English Language, and level 2 or above in Mathematics Compulsory Part and Liberal Studies.

In Chinese Language, 85.2% of day school candidates attained level 2 or above, representing an increase of 3.3% as compared to 2015, while 55.2% and 9.2% were awarded level 3 or above and level 5 or above respectively.

About 80.3% of day school candidates obtained level 2 or above in English Language, showing an increase of 1% as compared to last year. The percentages of candidates getting level 3 or above and level 5 or above are 55.1% and 10.3% respectively. It is noted that in both Chinese Language and English Language, day school candidates' performance have improved across the board.

In Mathematics Compulsory Part, 81.3% and 13.8% of day school candidates attained level 2 or above and level 5 or above respectively, which are comparable to last year.

About 89.4% of day school candidates achieved level 2 or above in Liberal Studies, representing an increase of 2.2% from last year; while about 9.1% attained level 5 or above, a decrease of 1.4% as compared to last year.

In addition to the 24 Category A subjects, the HKDSE also offers 36 Category B Applied Learning subjects and six Category C Other Language subjects in 2016. Candidates who took Category B Applied Learning subjects achieved `Attained' or above in 91.9% and `Attained with Distinction' in 23.2% of the 3,745 subjects assessed.

A total of 337 candidates entered Category C Other Language subjects this year. These subjects were examined using the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level question papers from Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). The results of the June 2016 series examinations will be released on 10 August while candidates who sat the November 2015 series examinations had already received their results in February 2016.

There were more than 13,500 invigilator-sessions for the written papers and listening tests which were held in 399 schools this year. Special examination arrangements were made for 2,047 candidates with special educational needs and a total of 160 special examination centres were set up.

This year about 910,000 scripts were marked onscreen in 13 assessment centres throughout the territory. About 4,500 markers, 380 marking assistants and 1,000 oral examiners were appointed to assess candidates' performance.
