From 1996 to 2007, I ran the Summer School for Social Sciences which provided short courses for research students, funded with UGC grant every year. From 2008 onwards, it has been taken over by the faculty, but I continue to act as an advisor.
18. Statistical Computing
I was responsible for organizing suitable computing facilities for the Statistics department for more than 10 years, which I developed up to 15 microcomputers with associated peripherals networked within the department and linked to the university VAX and IBM machines and a laboratory with 20 networked micros for student use. This is now handled by a full-time Computer Officer. Since taking over in the SSRC, I have been solely responsible for the planning and all software development of a bilingual computer-aided telephone survey system for the Social Sciences Research Centre which has been used in all the Centre's telephone surveys. This was the first such system in Hong Kong, and uses 35 lines using the latest Apple Macintosh technology.
'MRSP - Market Research Statistical Package'. The package has been on sale since March 1984 and covers a wide range of statistical techniques, specializing in non metric methods and including multivariate regression, MANOVA, discriminant analysis, principal components, multi-response tables, correspondence analysis, automatic interaction detection, cluster analysis and non-parametric methods. The program consists of around 100,000 lines of code, which were all written by me. At its peak, the package had around 35 users at 18 sites, throughout Asia.
19. Ongoing Projects
1) Book contract with World Scientific – The Statistical Analysis of General Multivariate Data
20. Central Policy Unit
My work for the Unit was confidential, but included assisting with drafting of the Chief Executive’s annual Policy Address and writing speeches and policy documents on a wide range of topics, including health care, migration, population growth, opinion polls, education and technology, for our three clients, namely, the Chief Executive, the Chief Secretary and the Financial Secretary of the HKSARG and also for the Head of the CPU (Mr. Gordon Siu and then Dr. Edgar Cheng).
