Through interactions with authentic language and resources, students will cultivate a respect and understanding for the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries and communities. This course is designed to help students achieve a Novice High-Intermediate Low proficiency level and to prepare them for Spanish III. Homework assignments may require students to watch a video, do an online practice activity, or research independently. Students should spend time at home studying the language daily. Homework and classwork are designed to be completed within a certain timeframe to most effectively facilitate student learning. Therefore, these assignments are due on the date indicated in class or on eClass.ProjectStudents complete a Culture Expo group project to explore an element of Hispanic culture and share what they have learned with their peers in other sections of Spanish. Time is given in class for students to work collaboratively, but students should plan to complete some components outside of class to prepare for the expo. Because other classes attending the expos, presentations must be made on the date schedule in coordination with the teacher when the project is assigned.AssessmentsStudents periodically take formative assessments in the form of quizzes to measure progress. At the conclusion of each unit, students take a summative test to assess their proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students have one week to make up a missed assessment due to an absence. Students may retake up to two tests. Quizzes may not be retaken.eClassStudents use eClass to view the course calendar, access and submit online assignments, access the eTextbook, and find helpful sites to practice Spanish.Grades and Parent PortalThe Parent Portal is available for parents and students to view grades, attendance and discipline records at any time. Please contact the instructor if you do not have access to the Portal to request a printed copy of your student’s progress. CheatingCheating is not tolerated. Forms of cheating include: using a cell phone during an assessment, using a “cheat sheet”, copying from a classmate, receiving and/or providing answers/questions prior to taking the assessment, using an online translator. Parents of students found cheating will be contacted and students will:receive a zero on the assessment, orhave the opportunity to redo the assessment/ the assignment and receive a disciplinary referral for cheating ................
