Roger learned this delightful singing game from Judy Bond as an Orff Schulwerk Level I student at Hamline University in 1989 and used it at the beginning of every school year until he retired in 2013. When you learn high quality materials from exemplary teachers like Judy Bond those materials will work for your entire career. We predict that this song will still be helping teachers learn student names thirty years from now!

- Students sit in a circle. You walk around the circle singing the song. - When you get to the end of the song, choose to bring a student to town with you.

That student stands and takes your hand as you sing, "Ms. Smith takes Julie," on mi, re, do. - You and "Julie" travel around the circle holding hands while the class sings the song. At the end of the song "Julie" selects a new friend to join you on your trip to town, your line grows longer, and all sing, "Ms. Smith takes Julie. Julie takes Jamal." - Repeat until the entire class is singing and traveling in a line as they go to town. - Roger usually ends this activity by snaking the line around quickly and singing, "We're very, very late" until the line breaks down with squeals of delight.

This Name Game is a variant of a jump rope rhyme that has been around a very long time. It works well with older students.

- Demonstrate entire BP (body percussion) pattern for the piece. Class observes. - Ask the students to perform the BP pattern with you. - Class performs the BP without you. - Class performs the BP pattern while you add the chant with your data. - Perform your introduction chant again. This time the class echoes, with

appropriate noun modifications. (His name is Roger. He comes from Rome. And he sells rutabagas.) - Preparation for the game:

- Think of the first letter of your first name. - Think of three places that begin with that letter. - Think of three things you could sell that begin with that letter. - Proceed around the circle, each student inserting his/her information. Class echoes each student. NOTE: No repeating a place or item for sale. (That's why you prepared by thinking of three.)
