The special rate for the N.I.A. convention is available by calling (847) 671-6350, and is valid from July 23 through July 29. The hotel is located in a prime convention and travel area, so please do not delay in making your reservations. There are several hotels in the vicinity; prices are generally higher than the show rate at the Holiday Inn - O’Hare.

R.V. AND CAMPING INFORMATION: Campers will be permitted to park on the hotel premises at no charge; as long as you are a guest of the hotel. The nearest campgrounds with hook-ups are Buffalo Park Forest Preserve in Algonquin (847) 658-1188, Gages Lake Camping in Gages Lake (847) 223-5541, Paul Wolff Forest Preserve in Elgin (847) 695-8410 and Fox River Preserve in Barrington (847) 381-0669. Banquet Information

The National Insulator Association Awards Banquet will be held Saturday, July 26 in the room adjacent to the show hall.

The banquet offers a great chance to meet other collectors and enjoy a meal together. Conversations are relaxed and the atmosphere is semi-formal yet familiar. Attendees enjoy the excitement of the awards presentations whether they win one or get to see others receive one. Pleasurable surprises are planned for the Chicago National’s NIA awards Banquet.

Cocktail hour will run from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m., a cash bar and entertainment will be available during this time. We will be served dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Following dinner, the awards program will begin, commencing with awards presented by the N.I.A. Presentations of awards by local clubs and individuals will follow. We encourage those clubs and individuals to keep their presentations brief to allow more time for attendees to converse.

Dinner selections include an appetizer, entree, vegetables, roll, dessert, and coffee, tea, or soda pop. Each person has a choice of entree of either Chicken Marsala (boneless breast of chicken topped with marsala sweet wine sauce and mushrooms) or London Broil with Bordelaise Sauce.

The cost for the banquet is $25 for adults, $12.50 for children between 4 and 11, and free for children under 4. Seating is limited, and reservations will not be accepted after July 7.

Dealer/Exhibitor Information

All dealers and exhibitors must fill out and return the dealer contract even if they have already reserved their table(s). We need to know helper and family member names in order to make up name tags in advance. If this information changes, one of the show hosts must be notified two weeks prior to the show.

Dealer and exhibitor set-up hours and show hours are listed in the Show Schedule.

Sales tables are 6 feet in length. Exhibitor tables are 8 feet in length.

Dealers and exhibitors who set up on Friday (or Thursday for exhibitors) must be N.I.A. members. Since the N.I.A. does not start processing memberships until shortly before the public is admitted, dealers or exhibitors who put off joining or renewing until the show will have to wait until then to set up! Avoid this problem by renewing today. NIA membership dues of $10 can be sent to Joe Beres @ 1315 Old Mill Path, Broadview Heights, OH 44147.

When you arrive at the show hall Thursday night, you must check in at the Greater Chicago Insulator Club table, located outside the show hall. You will receive your name tags and dealer packet, and will be permitted to enter the show hall.

Please see the enclosed N.I.A. GENERAL SHOW FLOOR RULES for important information. Pay particular attention to Rule # 3 regarding fake and altered insulators, as this has been recently revised by the Board Of Directors of the N.I.A. Exhibitors should also read the enclosed N.I.A. EXHIBIT AND JUDGING RULES.

Dealers and exhibitors must remain set up until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, as this is the advertised closing time of the show. This is especially important because there is a fee for admission. Exceptions to this rule will be made by prior arrangement only.

It is recommended that dealers and exhibitors bring their own hand carts.

White table covers will be provided for dealers and exhibitors.

The show hosts have done and will continue to do their best to accommodate those dealers and exhibitors requesting electricity on a first-come, first-served basis. Dealers and exhibitors must provide their own electrical cords.

Neither the N.I.A., the Greater Chicago Insulator Club, the Holiday Inn-O’Hare International, nor the show host committee will be responsible for theft, loss, or breakage of participant property.

DEALERS:

Dealers are responsible for collecting and paying any applicable taxes. Any further questions can be addressed by the show hosts either before or during the show.

Sales table cancellations received by June 1, 1997 will be refunded in full. After that date, refunds are at the show hosts’ discretion, based upon table resale. No-shows will not receive a refund.

EXHIBITORS:

The show hosts will do their best to accommodate all space needs for exhibits; however, our space is limited. Tables are a standard 8 feet. Additional table and floor space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Exhibitors are requested to cancel or update their space needs as soon as possible so as to allow the show hosts to best re-use the space.

We cannot guarantee that lighting in all exhibit areas is equally ideal. Exhibitors are encouraged to enhance their displays with sufficient lighting.

N.I.A. General Show Floor Rules

These Floor Rules have been adopted by the NIA Board as a guide to proper conduct of individuals at insulator shows, and they are to be publicized to all show participants and attendees. Only items #1 through #7 are of concern to the general public; all items #1 through #17 are of concern to the sales table dealers and exhibitors.

1. All participants shall abide by the NIA Code of Ethics.

2. Participants shall not knowingly misrepresent the attribution, condition, rarity or value of insulators or related items they offer for sale or trade.

3. Fakes, alterations, reproductions and/or highly questionable insulators or related items may only be brought onto the show premises if they are PERMANENTLY MARKED or embossed so as to indicate their lack of authenticity. It shall be the show host's responsibility to strictly enforce this rule and the decision of the show host shall be final. (See NIA Position on Fakes and Reproductions below).

4. All repaired items on sales tables must be clearly labeled as such.

5. All show participants and the attending public shall respect any show rules in force with respect to local ordinances and restrictions imposed by the owner of the facility.

6. Positively no public attendance during show setup hours.

7. "Aisle dealing" by the attending public will not be permitted.

8. It will not be permissible for sales table dealers to "work the aisles" in any fashion which preempts the opportunities of fellow dealers.

9. Dealer side shows (spotlights, excessive cow bell ringing, etc.) shall not be carried to the point of being abusive to fellow dealers and the general public.

10. Dealers will not sublet all or portions of tables without first consulting with the show chairman and obtaining permission.

11. Dealers shall keep aisles in front of tables free of boxes and clutter.

12. Dealers are encouraged to not leave their uncovered tables unattended at any time and do so at their own risk of loss.

13. Dealers should keep their sales tables intact until the end of the published show hours. There will be exceptions made for those driving long distances or needing to make other travel connections, but advance arrangements should be made with the show chairman when making table reservations. The chairman reserves the right to locate such tables on the outer aisles or near exits to avoid disruption of the rest of the show with any early departures. The chairman may announce blanket authority for early takedown at such time as public attendance appears to have essentially ceased anytime Sunday afternoon.

14. Dealers and exhibitors will be responsible for any damage they do to the facilities with their setup practices. Please no thumbtacks and no signs or other items taped to walls or furnishings.

15. The NIA and the show host will make every effort to provide good security, but neither will be responsible for any loss of participant property due to theft, loss or breakage. Each dealer and exhibitor is asked to help in security by watching after his own items and keeping an eye on adjacent tables in situations of obvious risk.

16. At the NIA National Show only, exhibitors and sales table dealers who offer a substantial amount (over 25% of table) of insulators and/or "related items" must be NIA members.

17. The reservation of a table constitutes the acceptance of these rules and agreement to comply with them.

NIA POSITION ON FAKES AND REPRODUCTIONS

1. It is not intended that items in question have to literally be marked "fake" or the equivalent. A permanent marking with the date of manufacture, initials of an individual, or even a name may be sufficient. The goal is that whatever marking is used will cause the prospective purchaser to easily recognize that an item is a reproduction or fake, or cause them to question its authenticity.

2. We are asking that hosts of NIA sanctioned shows (and hopefully all insulator shows whether sanctioned or not) note the rules on repro or fake items in their contracts in addition to attaching a copy of the NIA General Show Floor Rules.

3. We are asking that show hosts monitor the tables during the setup and conduct of the show and take appropriate action if improperly marked and/or questionable items appear on tables. It is understood that the show host will have full support of the NIA for enforcement of the standards set forth. Any NIA Board member(s) who may be in attendance at an NIA sanctioned show will provide active assistance should a show host require such in resolving any violation of the NIA standards.

4. NIA sanctioned shows are by definition National and Regional shows but can also be defined as any show where the NIA ribbon is to be awarded for exhibits.

5. In addition, we are asking that all NIA members (and hopefully nonmembers) observe the rules on repro or fake items not only at shows, but at all times when dealing with their fellow collectors, including mail order transactions.

NIA Exhibit And Judging Rules

I. Purpose

1. To promote the insulator "story" to the general public, stressing education, history and information.

2. To encourage more collectors to display.

3. To standardize judging rules.

4. To increase interest in insulator collecting and thus attract new collectors.

5. To increase the quality of displays.

6. To make the judging as fair as humanly possible.

II. Categories

1. Threaded glass

2. Porcelain

3. Threadless

4. Specialty: one company, one style, patents, errors, etc.

5. Junior (exhibitor must be under 18 years age at show date. Exhibit items assembled and set up without excessive adult assistance.)

6. General: exhibits of mixed insulators, the total theme of which will not more accurately fit any other single category listing.

7. Color: glass, porcelain or combination.

8. Go-withs: must include some use of insulators and/or related items, but may include any other items which complete the theme of the exhibit.

9. Lightning rod equipment: insulators, balls, vanes, etc.

10. Foreign insulators and relateds

III. Exhibit Information

1. At the NIA National Show only, exhibitors whose exhibit consists of more than 25% of items categorized in Article II must be NIA members. Exhibit space shall be free on a first-come basis; however, show hosts may charge exhibitors a deposit in order to manage available space and insure good faith. All such deposits will be refunded to those who set up their exhibits. Exhibitors may be expected to bring their own fixtures, extension cords, etc. Exhibit space at the National Show shall be limited to items listed in the categories listed in Article II. Should available exhibit space remain after the deadline for reserving same, the show host may permit other noncompetitive exhibits of suitable antique/collectible items subject to approval of the Board of Directors.

2. The exhibitor will determine the category at the time of entry application.

3. Fake or altered items may be used on exhibits but must be clearly identified as such in the exhibit. Repaired items are also acceptable in exhibits.

4. All items in the exhibit must be owned by the exhibitor.

5. Club or group exhibits, or exhibits in which the items are owned by two or more persons, are acceptable but must be entered as noncompetitive.

6. Exhibits or portions thereof may not be marked "for sale" or collector valuation indicated in any way.

7. Exhibits should not be dismantled until end of show unless prior arrangements are made with the show hosts.

8. To assure exhibitor anonymity until the judging is completed, the exhibitor name cards will initially be turned face down with only an identifying exhibit number on the back side, and similarly any item used in the exhibit and which shows the name of the exhibitor or a relative should be removed or covered until judging is complete.

9. Exhibitors are requested to display their award(s) on their exhibit until it is taken down.

10. Exhibitors are asked to wear any special name cards or badges which may be provided.

11. A tally sheet will be furnished to exhibitors after the judging, showing how the judges rated each exhibit as compared with other entrants in the same category. This will allow exhibitors to improve exhibits and technique in the future. The judges will not be identified on these tally sheets.

12. Judges and exhibitors should remember that displays are for the general public as well as for other members of the hobby, so it is desirable to be creative and original, and avoid showing the same exhibit several times without substantial modification. Repetitive showings of the same exhibit could result in a reduced score.

IV. Judging Information

1. There will be a minimum of three judges for any category, and a given person may judge more than one category, if qualified.

2. All judges at a NIA National should have previous judging experience.

3. The majority of the judges at a NIA Regional should have previous judging experience. (The NIA encourages hosts of local and NIA Regional shows to also utilize persons as judges who have never judged before in order to give them judging experience.)

4. Judging panels should include at least one woman judge.

5. At NIA National shows the judging panel should include at least one judge from each of the three NIA regions.

6. Judging decisions will be final. Ties will be rejudged.

7. A person may not judge any category in which that person or a family member has an entry.

8. Prior to judging, the show host or judging chairman shall meet with the judging panel to review and discuss these rules. (See following item #10 in this section.)

9. Judging will be on a standard NIA 100-point system. The average of all judges for any given category will be the final score.

The standard NIA 100-point system:

30 Showmanship. (Eyecatching, public appeal, good use of go-withs, display props, lighting, etc.)

30 Education. (Information, history, explanation, good use of titles, labels, pass-outs, etc.)

30 Rarity. (This must be considered in context with the items on display.)

5 Variety. (A wide range of styles, colors, shapes, etc.)

5 Originality. (Independent and creative thought, freshness of idea, new or unusual arrangement, etc.)

In addition to the positive scoring shown above, the judges are allowed to deduct from one to five points for each of the following exhibit deficiencies:

• Condition. (Points deducted if the exhibit is dirty or not presentable, or if the items exhibited are unclean, damaged excessively, have unsightly repairs, etc.)

• Category nonadherence. (Points deducted for items that are foreign to the category entered, such as a threadless insulator in a threaded exhibit, a domestic insulator in a foreign exhibit, etc.)

12. Judges will be furnished standardized printed scoring sheets and accompanied by detailed guidelines on a number of points, of which the two most important are as follows:

• Judges should consider each grading factor separately without regard to other factors. Avoid the "halo" effect, such as a tendency to give an exhibit high scores in "Showmanship" and/or "Education" because it is outstanding in "Rarity".

• To make scoring meaningful, judges should score "average exhibits in the middle of the point range (such as 15 points for Showmanship, etc.) Inferior or superior ratings will range downward or upward from that median as appropriate.

The Combined Display

Combined displays at the National offer a chance to see comprehensive presentations of insulators or go-withs. In keeping with the idea, two combined displays will be put together.

First, a combined display of radio insulators will be presented. In 1994, the first newsletter for collectors of these insulators was issued, however, there are still no reference books, identification guides, or price guides on the subject so this combined display promises to break much new ground by showing what’s out there.

The second combined display will focus on insulator go-withs. These include advertising, ashtrays, photos, commemoratives, postcards, and stamps related to insulators. Again, this is material seldom seen in a comprehensive gathering and which often has few references or price guides associated with it.

If you have material fitting one of these two displays and would like to share them with all of us at the National in non-competitive exhibits, there is a separate form to fill out. Educational information will be provided with each exhibit. Security will be available during the entire show.

Set-up time for the non-competitive exhibits will be Thursday, July 24 from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Each contributor will receive a receipt for each item used in the display. Please plan to have your items in the display until 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 27 when we plan to break down the non-competitive exhibits.

Your participation in a joint exhibit will help make the 1997 Chicago National memorable and continue a long tradition of exciting displays at the National. Past shows that achieved this stature include:

• The New England room at the 1995 Marlborough, MA National

• Patent May 2 1893 exhibit at the 1993 Denver National

• The big Denver glass display at the 1991 Cedar Rapids National

• The Boston Bottle Works exhibit at the 1989 Allentown National

• The seldom seen display at the 1986 Saratoga Springs National

• California’s at the 1981 Sacramento National

• Threadless at the 1980 Herkimer National

The entry deadline is July 1, 1997. In case of duplicate entries (identical pieces), the show hosts will determine the entry. ALL prospective contributors will receive a written reply.

Show Directory Advertising

Show directories have been an important part of National shows. This show directory will be no exception. Plans for the show directory include a list of dealers and a floor layout of tables. This is especially important for a show of this size. Dealers will be able to tell their customers what table number they are and with the purchase of the directory, the customer can find them right away. Information on the non-competitive and corporate exhibits will also be included. This directory promises to be full of new information on both radio strains and go-withs that have seldomly been seen before or assembled in one publication. Advertisements from local businesses including restaurants will be published along with advertising from people in the insulator hobby.

Getting To The Show By Car

The intersection of I-294, I-190, and I-90 is very close to the hotel and O’Hare Airport. There is usually high traffic volumes in this area. All the toll booths are designed with the automatics (exact change) on the left and the manuals on the right. I would suggest bringing exact change with you. The tolls are 40 cents.

COMING FROM THE SOUTH: Heading North from I-294 exit the River Road exit. You will be turning right and coming up on a toll Booth; use the AUTOMATICS. Immediately after paying the toll exit to your left onto River Road. Turn right onto River Road and head south approximately 4 blocks. The Holiday Inn - O’Hare is located on your right at the Northwest corner of River Road and Balmoral Road.

COMING FROM THE NORTH: Heading South on I-294 exit onto I-190 to O’Hare Airport. In this case, I would suggest using the MANUAL lanes of the toll booth. As soon as you exit the toll booth, you will have to exit South onto Mannheim Road (RT 45 & RT 12) and immediately exit back off of Mannheim onto I-190 going back East. (you will be completing half of a cloverleaf). Traveling East on I-190; exit onto River Rd South. Head south approximately 4 blocks. The Holiday Inn - O’Hare is located on your right at the northwest corner of River Road and Balmoral Road.

COMING FROM THE WEST: Heading East on I-90 exit West onto I-190 to O’Hare Airport. In this case, I would suggest using the MANUAL lanes of the toll booth. As soon as you exit the toll booth, you will have to exit South onto Mannheim Road (RT 45 & RT 12) and immediately exit back off Mannheim onto I-190 going back East. (you will be completing half of a cloverleaf). Traveling East on I-190; exit onto River Rd South. Head south approximately 4 blocks. The Holiday Inn - O’Hare is located on your right at the northwest corner of River Road and Balmoral Road.

COMING FROM THE CITY: Heading West on I-90 exit West onto I-190 to O’Hare Airport. Exit onto River Road South. Turn right onto River Road and head south approximately 4 blocks. The Holiday Inn - O’Hare is located on your right at the northwest corner of River Road and Balmoral Road.

Local Attractions
