PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hi! I hope everyone has been finding ways to stay cool this summer. It certainly has been very hot.

Our Specialty “B” Match will be held on August 17th at Memory Park in Newton, NJ. The Match is always a lot of fun and a good way to socialize young puppies and prepare your dogs for the fall Specialties. The Judge for the morning match is Shirley Ciprian (Lake Pine) and the Judge for our afternoon Encore match is Karen Lolli (Blackwatch).

In addition, immediately following the Encore Match, we will hold a General Meeting. This meeting is important because we will be taking nominations from the floor for our September slate of Board positions. We will also be discussing our September Back-to-Back Specialties being held with Tuxedo Park Kennel Club and Somerset Hills Kennel Club at North Branch Park in Bridgewater, NJ. Once again, Maryann Czerwinski is the Chairperson and she needs volunteers to help with our Specialty. We will also be having a Supported entry at the same site the day before (Thursday, September 4th) with the Big Apple Sporting Dog Society.

Information on the Match, our Specialties and other JSLRC events can be found on the club’s web site at

Have a great summer!

Making Fido Feel So Young

By Stephanie Kassab

Veterinary surgeon Dr. Richard Freedman extracts fat from Nunu the dog, part of a stem-cell transplantation procedure to combat the pooch’s chronic steoarthritis. The therapy will use stem cells to rebuild damaged cartilage in the dog’s legs.

Although it was his first time performing the procedure, Dr. Richard Freedman wasn’t nervous as he went into surgery Tuesday. As he cut into the patient’s fat, the only thought running through his mind was the amount he needed to extract.

No, Freedman was not performing liposuction. He was performing a new stem-cell transplantation procedure. His patient? A 13-year-old dog named Nunu, a mixed breed that had been suffering from osteoarthritis in her knees.

Instead of surgery, Freedman decided to use regenerative stem-cell therapy, a new procedure aimed at dogs that are suffering from chronic osteoarthritis, limited joint mobility and joint pain, Freedman said. The procedure allows stem cells to be extracted from the dog’s fat and then implanted into the problem areas, the most common being hips, elbows and knees.

Osteoarthritis had damaged the cartilage surrounding Nunu’s knees. Nunu walked stiff-legged, had trouble going up stairs and

carried her weight on her front legs, her owner Linda Underwood explained. Because of Nunu’s age and the degree of the disease, surgery was not a good option. Nunu had also had previous problems with her liver, and the post-surgery pain medications could have caused more liver damage, Underwood said.

Freedman needed to extract 25 to 30 grams of fat from Nunu’s body wall, the easiest area of the body to extract fat. He was able to extract about four times that amount. After extracting the fat, it was shipped to a lab in San Diego where technicians will then extract 3 million to 6 million stem cells. The cells will be sent back to the clinic in syringes and then implanted into Nunu’s joints.

Once inserted, the stem cells will recognize the damaged joint tissues and help repair those tissues. “Basically what we’re doing is helping the body heal itself,” Freedman said.

Nunu is expected to show improvement within 14 days after the cells have been implanted and continue to improve at a steady rate. Freedman said Nunu should be able to move her joints more comfortably, improving her quality of life.

Nunu will have the ability to do everyday dog activities such as “go for a walk [and] sit down instead of always having to lie down,” Freedman said.

Freedman explained that the procedure, which costs between $2,200 and $2,700, poses less risk than surgery. Because the cells come from the dog’s body and are not foreign, there is minimal or even no chance of the body rejecting the implanted stem cells, Freedman said. The procedure is also safer because the dog is under anesthesia for a shorter time than if it were undergoing surgery.

Stem-cell therapy can also offer a safer alternative to drugs. Many dogs that are suffering from osteoarthritis are put on non-steroidal and anti-inflammatory drugs, which can be detrimental to the dog’s health if not monitored carefully.

Freedman stressed, though, that this is not just a last resort. Rather, if the disease is detected early on, the procedure can be used as an interventional therapy. He also cautioned that not every canine is eligible for regenerative stem-cell therapy.

“A hard part is patient selection,” Freedman said. “They can’t have another systemic illness. … The reason is that those [stem] cells may not stay where they need to stay. They might home to other problematic areas.”

After having researched the new technology, Underwood was not nervous about Freedman performing the procedure. “It’s certainly not as technical as surgeries he does,”

Underwood said. “He certainly can extract a few fat cells and put them back in.”

Freedman, of Albemarle Veterinary Health Care Center on Westfield Road, is one of nine veterinarians in Virginia who have received credentials to perform stem-cell transplantation.

Regenerative stem-cell therapy has been offered to horses since 2003. It was launched last year to treat dogs. Although it is relatively new, the procedure is quickly becoming available nationwide. So far, 515 veterinarians have received credentials, said Dr. Julie Ryan Johnson, vice president of sales and marketing for Vet-Stem, the company responsible for certifying veterinarians in the procedure. She estimates that another 30 veterinarians will receive their credentials by the end of the week.

“It’s very cutting-edge,” Johnson said. “This is the latest thing veterinarians have to offer for animals that in the past have had chronic pain or disabilities due to arthritic injuries.”

Xylitol Danger!

Many of you may have received an email that was circulating around on the internet about someone who almost lost their puppy because he ate a pack of sugar free gum. The email claims that an ingredient in the gum, Xylitol, is highly toxic to dogs.

Well, according to , this email is not a scam but is true, and Xylitol is indeed something that needs to be taken heed with. To read more about the dangers of Xylitol, go to:

My father-in-law had prostate surgery.

We brought him to the hospital at 7:30 a.m., and he was operated on at eight.

We were amazed when the hospital called at noon to tell us he could go home.

Two months later our beagle, Bo,

also had prostate surgery.

When I brought him in, I asked the veterinarian what time I should pick him up. The vet told me Bo would

remain overnight.

"Overnight?" I said

"My father-in-law came home the same day."

The vet looked at me and said,

"Bo’s not on Medicare!"
