Welcome to Busy Bees Childcare

Dear Family,

Welcome to Busy Bees Childcare!

We are so excited to share our passion for young children’s care and education with you. Each day you will hear from us and your child about the fun experiences that we’ve shared together. Our goal is that your child will come home every day happy and eager to tell you about their day here at Busy Bees. We will be encouraging your child to ask questions, to explore their own ideas and to draw or write down what they learn through play to become independent learners.

We want your child to enjoy their day and to benefit from all the learning opportunities; we ask that you partner with us by preparing them for each day. This handbook will help explain how you can support, what you can expect from us and we can expect from you. We may find it necessary to make changes to this handbook for time to time, in that case we will provide you with a printed addendum.

You are now a part of our Busy Bees family and we welcome any questions you may have, comments or ideas, so please don’t hesitate to share. We look forward to partnering with you in your child’s care and education.

Sincerely,

Shoni Morris

Busy Bees Childcare Owner/Teacher

Philosophy

Busy Bees philosophy is that early childhood should be a time for exploration and discovery. Children should be allowed to develop at their own pace supported and guided to reach their full potential while maintaining a happy healthy self-esteem. Our purpose is to provide an atmosphere where your child can grow physically, social-emotionally, creatively, and intellectually while preparing for kindergarten.

About Busy Bees Childcare

We are a home daycare that provides children with a warm and safe place to be themselves. We are liability insured, CPR certified, and Live Scan finger printed. Busy Bees participates in the child care food program.  Our home is a one level single family home with a backyard filled with play structures suited for toddlers and children 12 years old and up.

We are in Antioch California less than five minutes from the Hwy 4 on-ramps going toward Oakland, Sacramento, and the Antioch Bridge.

We provide transportation to and from Orchard Park School in Oakley California, as well as other Antioch Schools.

Our “busy bees” are offered a variety of opportunities to explore and learn through play, meet new friends and go on field trips to farms to enjoy hayrides, farm animals, and pick fruits and vegetables. In the summer, we go to Contra Loma Recreational Park for swimming (life jackets are provided by the pool facility).

Your child will build basic socialization skills, hand eye coordination, large and fine motor skills, extended verbal vocabulary, and manners while having fun being a part of Busy Bee's Family!

Educational Program

Infants and toddlers grow and change at a fast pace. Busy Bees provides a safe and nurturing environment allowing exploration and learning while infants are supported emotionally and physically.

Preschool children are gaining more self-esteem and are better able to self-regulate their emotions. They are now better at communicating their feelings and are now ready for more independent play. Preschoolers will have more opportunity for self-exploration, structured activities, and hand-on learning to develop their knowledge in literacy, math, science, and social skills.

School age children are very independent and are given many opportunities to utilize their problem-solving skills, wide vocabulary, and to develop their leadership skills. School age children are provided help with their homework and school projects. They have access to the computer and many informational books.

~Young children learn through play, and Busy Bees has a certified infant and toddler teacher that provide the foundation necessary to build a love of learning. The program is designed to care for and educate your infant and toddler by providing the following benefits:

~Nurturing personal care that builds a secure and trusting relationship: We respond to your infants and toddler’s cues with sensitivity by using words, facial expressions and eye contact to communicate. Family photos are welcomed to promote self-awareness and provide familiarity.

~Teacher-child interactions that spark curiosity and socialization, playtime and experiences that help boost cognitive and motor skills: Daily interactions help your child learn to engage with others as they are spoken to and gestured to non-verbally (infants). As we talk to your child and help them explore they will learn cause-and-effect, trial-and-error, and object permanence through play, with a variety of materials to help them discover shapes, textures, colors, and sizes.

The environment has:

~age appropriate materials and equipment to support learning and development

~all ages can freely move and explore

~safe sleeping routine meets the American Academy of Pediatrics.

~all ages are provided with activities to learn and grow

Discipline and guidance

Children who are having difficulty for any reason will be re-directed to another activity with teacher assistance. If a child’s behavior is likely to result in harm to the child, or others or property, or seriously disrupt the rest of the groups interactions, the child will be separated briefly from the group. The child will sit with another assistant or teacher and be supervised the entire time until they can gain enough self-control to rejoin the group. Interaction between the child and assistant or teacher will take place immediately to guide the child towards appropriate behavior. A method of discipline which frightens, demeans, or humiliates a child is strictly prohibited.

Communicating with Families

In addition to daily check-ins during drop off and pick up, there are many ways to keep you knowledgeable about what is happening during your child’s day at Busy Bees.

• Weekly handouts/reminders of upcoming planned activities

• Telephone calls or text messages

• E-mails

• Notices

• Articles of interest, community resources or happenings that may interest your child or family.

Parent involvement

At Busy Bees we strive to provide children with the best start in life by trying to ensure they have all the tools they need to begin kindergarten and succeed in all future grade levels. We ask that parents partner with Busy Bees in completing assessment questionnaires, health assessments, and meet for two conferences per year. This requires some time set aside and additional paper work to be filled out 3-4 times per year.

Other ways for families to be involved at Busy Bees is to donate any of the items on the monthly newsletter and stop by anytime to help complete a fun art project or watch your little one play. We have an open-door policy and you may stop by unannounced anytime.

Healthy Family’s

Child Assessments

The Ages & Stages Questionnaires-Social Emotional (ASQ: SE) were developed to monitor a child’s development in the behavioral areas of self-regulation, compliance, communication, adaptive, autonomy, affect and interaction with people. This ASQ and ASQ-SE is a questionnaire that is simple for parents and providers to complete to evaluate children’s current developmental and social-emotional development. Busy Bees uses the Ages and Stages Questionnaire for social-emotional screening of your children from age 2 months through 60 months of age. All screenings must be done within three months of entry into the program. Your child’s teacher will administer the ASQ or ASQ-SE and the results will be shared and discussed with you during your first formal family/teacher conference. Families are asked to participate in the screening process by completing the ASQ with their child at home. The ASQ-SE is used to monitor children’s social-emotional development and help answer questions that occur regarding any concerns about their development. I have read and understand Busy Bees Childcare assessment policies and procedures. I grant permission for my child to receive the ASQ and ASQ-SE Screening and I agree to complete the ASQ Questionnaire and/or the ASQ Social Emotional (ASQ-SE) Developmental Screening and return the completed forms to my child’s lead teacher.

Immunizations

Immunizations are an important part of your child’s health and upon enrollment we will need an up to date copy of your child’s immunization records. Although here at Busy Bees we understand if this is not a part of your family’s beliefs, and you have chosen to not vaccinate your child or have chosen a few vaccines, you can still enroll. A form will be provided for you to fill out and sign to keep in your child’s file stating that your child is not vaccinated and or has only had some vaccines.

Health Evaluation (physicians report)

The Health Evaluation form helps us at Busy Bees know what tests and assessments your child has had at their pediatrician’s office. This type of assessment will be beneficial to the child as well as the other children in the childcare facility. It can help to detect early health problems such as hearing and vison problems. Early detection can help to provide a child with glasses that will enable them to see and be able to learn at the proper rate, whereas without the assessment it can go undetected and reading could be delayed.

Medication administration

A medical release/medication dispensing form as well as doctor instructions are required for all medicine (Tylenol included) administered to the child while in care. Medications must be brought in the original container sealed with child’s name on the bottle.
