Thank you to Richard Haley for creating this handout

Earthsave Baltimore is a completely volunteer operated nonprofit that educates people about the powerful impact our food choices have on the environment, our health, and all life on Earth. We promote a shift toward an Earth-friendly diet based on plant foods.

And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.

~Abraham Lincoln~

Hi Earthsavers,

Hope that you were among those fortunate ones who heard Dr. Joel Fuhrman speak at our June veg dinner series event. His talk about the “Eat to Live” program for normalizing weight and preventing chronic disease was excellent, and gave us all something to think about. We intend to invite him back to Baltimore next spring to speak at a much larger venue. You might like to check out his website at .

Here’s a reminder that Earthsave’s veg dinner series will not meet in July. That will help clear our calendars for the annual Vegetarian Summerfest, a terrific five-day educational conference from July 5th – 9th in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. You may register for the weekend program only, if you like. Hope you will be there.

We’re very excited, also, about a change in venue for our dinner/lecture series events. On August 12th, we will begin meeting in a larger room at a very attractive new location in Owings Mills at the new Your Prescription for Health holistic center at 10210 South Dolfield Road. Hope that you will be there with us!

Peace, Don Robertson

VEG MEETUP DISCUSSION GROUP will get together this Wednesday, June 28th, at 7 pm at the Yabba Pot restaurant at 771 Washington Blvd., one block from Martin Luther King Blvd., downtown. One topic we expect to discuss is some of the most compelling reasons we’ve found to change our diet and lifestyle. You might find it helpful to see a list of “101reasons Why I’m a Vegetarian” at . It’s helpful, though not required, for you to officially sign up online at to attend. That gives members a better idea of how many are likely to attend. Join us for great food and conversation!

EMAIL FILM SERIES: I get an email each Monday at 9 am from Nick Ascue’s film series, with a link to a short new inspirational film each week. It was a nice surprise to see that the interview subject for today’s film was an old hero of mine, Tim Galwey, who, back in the ‘60s wrote a book that I loved called The Inner Game of Tennis. The book was about a more relaxed, Zen-like way of playing the game of tennis, and of life. Here’s the link to today’s film . Enjoy!

FARM ANIMAL WELFARE CONGRESSIONAL HEARING: The Congressional Friends of Animals Caucus will conduct a hearing on June 29, 2006 on the wider scope of farm animal welfare.  This is a significant event -- probably the first time there has ever been a Congressional hearing on the broad scope of farm animal welfare. It is critically important that we show support for this effort through attendance.

When: June 29, 2006 at 1:30pm.

Where: Rayburn House Office Building, Room 2203, Independence Avenue SW and South Capitol Street, Washington, DC.

Directions: Entrances to the Rayburn House Office Building are on South Capitol Street and Independence Avenue, two blocks west of the Capitol South Metro stop.

Here’s how you can help! Attend the hearing, if possible; Urge others to show up and help demonstrate support for humane reform to Congress and the media; Circulate this information to your contacts in the Washington, D.C. area, asking them to attend; Further circulate this alert to your contacts outside the D.C. area, asking them to forward to anyone they know in the D.C. area.

Here’s a link to a map showing the location of the Rayburn House Office Building: . For more information, please contact Farm Sanctuary at campaign@ or call 607-583-2225 ext 251.

A WELLNESS AND PREVENTION CARE PLAN called The Seven Essentials of A.W.E.S.O.M.E. Health will be presented on July 1st 2006 8:30 am - 4:30 pm at Brian Sanderoff’s new Your Prescription for Health center at 10210 South Dolfield Road in Owings Mills. See for more info on the health center.

The presenters are The Healing Partnership, which consists of David Waltos MD, Heidi Waltos RN and Michelle Burchick RN. See .

Healthcare practitioners will be able to integrate this information into your practice (assessment tools included). Healthcare leaders will learn a comprehensive model for what prevention really can look like, and consumers can get the information we need to keep ourselves well.

This is a Lifestyle Seminar that provides people with a systematic, simple, yet comprehensive method of addressing the effects of lifestyle on our internal environment. This is the first in a series of unique seminars, which are designed to be attended by healthcare consumers and practitioners together.

What are the seven essentials? Air, Water, Eating nutritiously, Sleep, Optimism, Movement, and Energy.

Come discover a new way of looking at health, starting with a simple approach, identifying what the body is deficient in, and then addressing these issues.  Learn how to rid your body of inflammation, the "root cause" of so many symptoms. Discuss the prevalence and costs of poor air quality, find out what the #1 stressor of the body is, learn about malnutrition, the impact of sleep deprivation, the effects of emotion, and the concept that we are "Energy Beings."  You will come away with a simple plan, which will result in a great improvement to your over-all health.

It will be presented by The Healing Partnership, LLC. (Two nurses and a Doc.) It will happen on July 1st 2006 from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. The fee is just $49. For nurses, who receive (6.6 CEU's), the fee is $79 in advance and $94 at the door. Registration begins at 7:45 am, and will end at 8:45 am. To pre-register call Jen at 410 356 2169 x211.

EDUCATION AND FUN at VEG SUMMERFEST: Vegetarian Summerfest, our favorite annual educational conference, is set for July 5th–9th at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, PA. As usual, the North American Vegetarian Society has assembled a stellar lineup of speakers and workshop facilitators. Included will be Dr. T. Colin Campbell, director of the massive Cornell/Oxford/China Health Project, the most comprehensive study ever undertaken on the relationship between diet and disease. Lots of fitness and social activities and cooking classes are also scheduled. Get all the details by going to .

A MENU OF LOVE: THE VEGETARIAN LIFESTYLE is the title of a free talk that Don Robertson will present at Breathe Books in Hampden on Sunday, July 23, at 3 p.m. Don, who is the founding Director of Earthsave Baltimore, will show us the wide-ranging impact that our food choices have on the environment, our health, and all life on Earth. Don will point to some of the best evidence favoring a shift toward a whole foods, plant-based diet. He will also look at some of the toughest barriers we face in making diet and lifestyle changes. Adopting these dietary changes is a powerful way to love this planet and all those who share it. Breathe Books is located at 810 W 36th Street, Baltimore, MD 21211. (410-235-READ) See the website at for a listing of all upcoming presentations.

MICROWAVE STUDY: Here’s a link to a home study that was done to compare the growth of identical plants, one that was watered with conventionally boiled water, and one that was watered with microwave boiled water. We’re not sure just how rigorously scientific methods were applied, but the results certainly got our attention. See

IF YOU COULD OWN JUST ONE BOOK about the powerful impact our food choices have on the planet and on all those who share it, John Robbins’ FOOD REVOLUTION would make an excellent choice. It gives us both the information and the encouragement we need in order to reclaim the health of our bodies and our planet.

FOOD REVOLUTION can be found in most bookstores and libraries, or you may order a copy from EarthSave. The book’s cover price is $18.
