COLITISLike many people, I suffered from many effects due to abuse and poor diet. For the first 30 years of my life, I went to many doctors due to Crohn’s, colitis, arthritis, hormonal imbalances, eczema, PTSD and anxiety disorders and depression. I used sugar to soothe my misery, not realizing that sugar was the main cause of inflammation. Not one of the many doctors I consulted ever asked what I ate. They just gave me more pills. When I told doctors that I drank 2 liters of Cola a day and lived on sweets, they replied, “Good. That will keep your energy up.” When I asked if food had anything to do with my illnesses, they repeated the same mantra, “WHAT YOU EAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ILLNESS.” My symptoms worsened as I got older. A thyroid condition, which could have been treated naturally, was “solved” by removing my thyroid gland. Then, my gastroenterologist declared that my colon needed to be removed and replaced with a stoma. It was 1972. I was in shock. I was thirty years old, with a baby to care for. On the way home, I entered a health food store for the first time, as I thought such places were for weirdos. I tearfully told the saleslady what had happened. Anne told me to see a holistic M.D., named Alan Nitler. He put me on a two-week watermelon-avocado diet and gave me vitamins to calm my nerves and strengthen my digestive system. Avoiding sugar was agony. I still remember calling Dr. Nitler the first day and crying, “I’d rather die than stop eating sugar!” He calmly assured me that within three days, my sugar craving would cease and by forty days, my taste buds would revive so that healthy foods would actually be tasty. After the two weeks, I began to slowly introduce healthy foods according to the Rambam’s suggestion; i.e., never combine fruit with protein and starches. I have followed this plan for 50 years, avoiding all grains and refined sugar. I still do need digestive enzymes and HCl if I eat a protein. But I’m healthy and strong.Full of enthusiasm for my new way of life, I typed up a one-page chart of this simple diet and went back to my gastroenterologist to tell him the wonderful news. It was 6 weeks after he told me that my intestines needed to be removed. Here I was, eating a variety of natural foods and feeling totally healthy. I na?vely thought he would be thrilled to learn how to help his patients heal. Instead, he angrily tore up the pages and threw them in the garbage, snorting, “This is nonsense! What you eat has nothing to do with your digestion! It’s all in your head!” It was a shock to realize that conventional medicine covers up symptoms of disease and is not concerned with healing. Any mention of a nutritional connection to disease is ridiculed. My illness was a Divine gift. By forcing me to stop eating sugar, it saved my life. The next miracle occurred in 2013, when I became aware of a genetic mutation called MTHFR defect. The MTHFR enzyme transfers B vitamins from the blood stream into the cells. Those who lack this enzyme cannot absorb B vitamins effectively, especially B9 (methyltetrahydrofolate). This defect can cause both physical and emotional illnesses, such as colitis, Crohn’s, anxiety and depression and exacerbate PTSD. Approximately 40% of the population lacks this enzyme to some degree. DOCTORS DO NOT WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT THIS! Finally, I had a name for the problems which had plagued me for so long. Since I began taking the methylated B9 and B12, all my “disorders” are under control! No eczema attacks either! By the way, few doctors know that the synthetic form of B9, FOLIC ACID, destroys FOLATE! No one should take folic acid. Sadly, when I try to publicize this information, no magazine will publish my articles. When I last saw my doctor for thyroid medication, he said, “Miriam, from you we don’t make any money!” Indeed! I found that doctors are get financial incentives to write as many prescriptions as possible. What a conflict of interest! There is no incentive to heal people!Even today, people with digestive disorders are still being told, “What you eat has nothing to do with your illness.” Thankfully, I have helped hundreds of people adopt a healthy diet to manage their illnesses. Avoiding sugar and taking MTHFR supplements can also reduce the need for psychiatric meds and reduce PTSD symptoms. Psych meds can lead to osteoporosis, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Sadly, few people are willing to give up sugar. When I say “It’s discipline or death,” they prefer death. Those who are willing to make changes feel so much healthier and happier. For example, studies have shown that people with a VITAMIN D level over 50, do not get the Covid-19 virus or numerous forms of cancer. Sugar also reduces the level of vitamins B and C. I wish frum magazines would educate the public and promote a healthy lifestyle instead of publishing ads that cause inflammation and illness. NOTE: Real mental illness does not respond to nutritional intervention, whereas people with MTHFR will feel better within a few days of making dietary changes and getting MTHFR supplementation, adequate sleep and the adoption of a more positive attitude. ................
