Holocaust Shoebox Project

Due: ___________________

Assigned Story: ______________________________________________ Pages: ______________

Objective: For two weeks, you and a partner will be working on a special “Shoebox” project based on your assigned Holocaust story from our class novel, Survivors: Children of the Holocaust by Allan Zullo and Mara Bovsun.

Instructions: Upon reading the assigned Holocaust story, you are to use a shoebox (with lid) to create the shoebox project. You will need 4” X 6” size lined index cards to write information on, and other items to decorate the shoebox and create the interior scene of the shoebox.

• Shoebox: The box is to be completely covered as part of the assignment. You may paint the box, glue construction paper, or wrapping paper, etc. onto the box to cover it. I should not be able to see the original box at all. The box should be big enough so that the index cards fit on the sides.

• Interior of the Shoebox: Decide what your favorite part of the story was. You must create that part of the story inside the shoebox. You may cut out pictures from magazines (or print them off of the computer), may use toys, clay, or other items to create this scene. Other items that may be used are Legos, dollhouse furniture, miniature trees, benches, and road-patterned items from a craft/train store, etc. In some way, the characters/people should also be shown in this scene.

• Index Cards: Each card must be neatly handwritten on or have a typed paper glued on to it. The index cards MUST be size 4” x 6” in any color. Glue the index cards to the four sides of the box as shown on the diagram.

o Index Card #1:

▪ Shoebox Book Report

▪ By: Student’s Name

▪ Title of Story: (The title must be capitalized and in quotation marks.)

o Index Card #2:

▪ Characters: (List the names of the main characters.)

▪ Setting: (The setting tells when and where the story takes place.)

o Index Card #3:

▪ Write a summary by describing in detail what happened in the story from beginning to end. The entire index card should be filled with writing.

o Index Card #4:

▪ Describe in detail what your favorite part of the story was and why that part was your favorite. The entire index card should be filled with writing.

Grades (6):

Shoebox A Shoe box is neatly and entirely covered. Shoebox is big enough so that the 4 index cards

fit on the sides without passing the edges of the box.

Interior of Shoebox A A scene is neatly and creatively displayed inside the box. There are free-standing

elements and various items used to creatively and accurately show an actual scene with

characters from the story.

Index Cards A The cards are all 4” x 6” and glued to the sides of the box. Each card has the required

writing/typing on it, according to instructions. The writing is neat and complete.

Syntax A Most spelling and grammar is correct. Every 7 errors will reduce the grade.

Behavior A The person worked efficiently and productively alongside his/her partner in making

equal contributions to the completion of the project.

The shoebox should be displayed as shown here, but with all sides covered by paper of some sort. Inside, will be your 3-D scene. The inside of the box should also be completely covered for your scene.
