PHYSICAL SCIENCE

PHYSICAL SCIENCE

Gobles High School

Mrs. Tullis

Class Materials Required:

• Textbook - Science Spectrum by Holt 2008

• Pencil

• Planner

• Three ring notebook

Course Description:

Ninth grade Physical science encompasses the integration of the major branches of science. The major units studied are chemistry and physics. Science interactions provide hands-on activities and discussions that allow students to discover by inquiry critical concepts and apply the knowledge they’ve constructed to their own lives.

Activities:

In this class, I will use various methods to try to get the student to attain a basic knowledge and understanding of physical and earth science. Demonstrations, labs, lecture, quizzes, and tests will be used to aid the student in understanding concepts. You are expected to read each chapter. If you have questions, PLEASE SEE ME in class, PLACE class, or before or after school.

Grading Procedures and Notes:

Grades for the class will come from several sources:

1) Homework 40%

2) Tests 20%

3) Labs 30%

4) Notebook 10%

Notebook Organization: Notebooks are graded so they will need to be neat, well organized, and completed according to how assignments are listed on their infinite campus.

*All materials in your notebook must be dated and complete to receive full credit

*Late Work: If homework is not turned in at the time the bell rings, you will receive a 50% on that assignment for up to one day. After this your score will be a 0.

These percentages are approximate. You will be responsible for keeping a notebook and it will be a grade. You will be required to keep track of your scores on the grade sheet your are given. This could be a graded assignment due at any point in each quarter. Make sure you keep all assignments. If there is an error in recording you must provide the assignment for the correction to be made.

Grading Scale:

A 100-90%

B 89-80%

C 79-70%

D 69-60%

• Quizzes: I will give quizzes over lecture and reading assignments as well as elements.

• Homework: Homework is very important and is expected to be on time. "In my locker, I left it at home, I had a basketball game last night" excuses will not be accepted. Have your work finished and in on time.

• Late work policy: Late homework is 50% credit. HOWEVER, each student will receive TWO homework “grace” passes because I understand that things happen that we have no control over and that sometimes people just have a bad day. The student is still expected to DO the homework, but can staple a homework “grace” pass to it and turn it in to me ASAP for full credit.

• Labs: We will do labs with partners several times this year and some labs will take more than one day. Class time will be given to work on labs. If the lab takes more than one day, make sure that you each have the information needed to complete the lab on time.

• Tests: You will have a test for each chapter and sometimes a test will be over two chapters. The test will have multiple choice, matching, short answer, and problems that you will need to show your work.

• Notebooks: Need to be in order according to how assignments are listed in your infinite campus.

Dates and Coverage: First semester Chemistry

Second semester Physics

It will about 2 weeks to complete a chapter and you will have a test covering each chapter.
