The total of 820 beds accounts for 93 percent of the crisis housing beds funded by the City of Los Angeles through LAHSA. “The increase in operating hours will better enable LAHSA and its funded agencies to provide critically-needed services to the population that access these facilities,” said Peter Lynn, LAHSA Executive Director. “This change is an important component of the City’s Comprehensive Homeless Strategies to better address homelessness across Los Angeles.”The City of Los Angeles provided $1.5 million to convert the facilities from 14 hours to 24 hours. When these facilities operated on the shorter schedule, the people they served had to vacate the premises – along with their possessions between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. These residents would often return in the late afternoon to get in line for a bed, which was not guaranteed. With the expanded hours, the people accessing a particular crisis housing center can remain there 90 consecutive days, in some cases longer. These sites are open throughout the day for clients to work with case managers in determining needed services. “We expect that the additional stability and greater access to services will help people move more quickly into permanent housing,” said Lynn.
