LITURGY FOR MOTHERING SUNDAY

Welcome:

Welcome to our service for Mothering Sunday.

Posies of flowers will be handed out

as you arrive in church this morning

Pr: As truly as God is our Father, so truly is God our Mother, and he revealed that in everything, and especially in these words where he says: “I am he; that is to say: I am he, the power and goodness of fatherhood; I am he, the wisdom and the lovingness of motherhood; I am he, the light and grace which is all blessed love; I am he, the Trinity….”

(The Showings, Long Text, Mother Julian of Norwich, 14th century).

Worship Focus: The lighting of five candles.

Candle 1. is lit: Nurturing God, we light this candle in

recognition of the great care and love

you have for each one of us.

All: Nurturing God, we praise and thank you.

Candle 2. is lit: Nurturing God, we light this candle in thanksgiving for all mothers, for all they do, or once did, for all they give, or once gave and for all they mean and will always mean.

All: Nurturing God, we praise and thank you.

Candle 3. is lit: Nurturing God, we light this candle for all families throughout the world.

All: Nurturing God, we praise and thank you.

Candle 4. is lit: Nurturing God, we light this candle for the family of the Church, here and everywhere.

All: Nurturing God, we praise and thank you.

Candle 5. is lit: Nurturing God, we light this candle for all who nurture and encourage others.

All: Nurturing God, we praise and thank you.

Call To Worship:

Pr: Come worship God, who said: “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.” (Isaiah 66:13a)

We now praise God with our voices, singing:

Hymn No: 343 - Love Divine All Loves Excelling

Hymn No: 29 – As We Are Gathered, Jesus is Here x 3

Hymn No: 23 – A New Commandment I Give Unto You x 3

Collect for Purity: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Confession and Absolution:

Pr: God is love and we are his children.

There is no room for fear in love,

We love because he loved us first.

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith.

Silence.

God our Father, we confess to you and to our fellow members in the body of Christ that we have sinned in thought word and deed, and in what we have failed to do. We are truly sorry. Forgive us our sins, and deliver us from the power of evil, for the sake of your Son who died for us, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Pr: God who is both power and love, forgive us and free us from our sins, heal and strengthen us by his Spirit, and raise us to new life in Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Kyrie: Lord, have mercy.

Lord have mercy.

Christ have mercy.

Christ have mercy.

Lord have mercy.

Lord have mercy.

Collect:

God of compassion, whose Son Jesus Christ, the child of Mary, shared the life of a home in Nazareth, and on the cross drew the whole human family to himself: strengthen us in our daily living that in joy and in sorrow we may know the power of your presence to bind together and to heal; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Old Testament Reading: Ruth 1:8, 16-17a

On the way, Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back to

your mother’s homes instead of coming with me.” But Ruth replied, “Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. I will go wherever you go and live wherever you live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. I will die and will be buried there.”

Short Homily.

Gospel:

When it is announced: Glory to Christ our Saviour.

At end: Praise to Christ our Lord.

Colossians 3:12-1712

As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. 13Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord* has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. 16Let the word of Christ* dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. * 17And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Guest Speaker:

Revd. Andrew Low from Glasgow City Mission.

Intercessions:

The Liturgy of the Sacrament:

Offering:

Pr: Let us present our offerings to the Lord.

Offertory Hymn: 104 AMR – For The Beauty of the Earth

All: Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the

splendour and the majesty: for everything in heaven and on earth is yours. All things come from you, and of your own we give you.

Please continue on page 12 of the Blue 1982 Liturgy Booklet.

prayer for humble access:

We do not presume to come to this your table, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, Gracious Lord, so to eat the Flesh of your dear Son, Jesus Christ, and to drink His Blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us.

Communion Hymn: 114 – From Heaven You Came

POST COMMUNION PRAYER:

Loving God, as a mother feeds her children at the breast you feed us in this sacrament with the food and drink of eternal life: help us who have tasted your goodness to grow in grace within the household of faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Recessional Hymn: 471 – Tell Out My Soul

Please join us in the Hall after the service
