Hale Kula Homeschool-School Improvement Plan

Hale Kula Homeschool-School Improvement PlanIntroductionHale Kula Home School was first Developed as a tutoring service, for after school tutoring. With the success of the establishment, parents wanted to have a Pre-K—K establishment during the day. All of the students were reading by year’s end, Hale Kula then went to PreK-6 and kept adding grades till it is now PreK-12. We service between 25-40 students each year and hope to increase this size after seeking a more adequate building.MissionAt Hale Kula Home School our mission is to provide a learning experience so that our students can meet or excel at their scholastics and social skills thereby increasing their self- confidence and self- esteem.BeliefsThe staff at Hale Kula Home School is always striving to improve techniques and curriculum so that students exhibit improvement and growth each year. Our staff embraces the teaching of all students, including those with special needs and those at-risk students. We believe that our students all belong in the same setting: one-room school house. The diversity of the classroom population, we feel, is beneficial and conducive to each of their improvement. We also feel that peer-grouping and diversity of materials will lead the whole class to academic success(improvement). We believe in involving each student, teacher, as well as any parents, that might wish to be involved, so that we become a community and support our students.GoalsTo meet or exceed proficiency in all areas of reading/spelling (as these areas are needed in all of the academics). To ensure a positive climate/culture that encourages positive interaction between staff, parents and students. The area that our SIP our school improvement plan is focusing on is:Academic ProficiencyPre-assessment provides us with the strengths and weaknesses of our students. We must inform the teachers of the data and follow through to see that the teaching if the teaching strategies need any adjustment thereby allowing all students to work to their fullest potential. This makes differentiation training an essential part of of our academic community. 2015-2016 SCHOOL DATATotal enrollment PreK-12 25Student attendance 97%Reading levels above grade level 8% At grade level 52% Below grade level 40% Data AnalysisThe chart below shows the students and their ages and whether they are above grade level (8%), at grade level (52%) or below grade level (40%).The 2015-2016 data shows that the students tested within their grade levels with only a few exceptions. These placement tests were administered without a time limit. Here, at Hale Kula, we administer without a time limit to try to avoid the ‘fear factor’. There had been an increase of 1.5 academic years, overall, from 2014-2015.This implies that the system is working but we are proposing the smart goal and SIP to keep up the standard of success. Factors influencing school success and student achievement are the teaching strategies used (re-evaluated every year), differentiation (as needed through our testing annually), high expectation for student achievement, class discipline, safe school environment (a no-tollerance rule on bullying or physical contact) and support from home or, if needed, extra support at school. There is no use of teaching for the tests. Attendance is not an issue in this data analysis. From the data it appears that the program is ‘flowing’ in a positive direction. However we feel that the reason for this is that we are keeping ourselves and then the program in constant renewal, in that we use teacher evaluation through observation, and also student evaluation of the learning environment so that our staff can attend to a problem, if it should arise.Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015 emphasizes the implementation of personalized learning (a student-centered approach). Personalized learning emphasizes;(1)Developing trusting and caring relationships between teachers and students, (2) Connecting learning to the real world, (3)linking curriculum to students interests, strengths and aspirations, (4) providing students with individualized targeted instruction, practice and support where they are struggling, (5) creating more flexible learning environments. To accomplish this type of leaning, for our reading and other programs, requires that we rethink and restructure our normal patterns of teaching.
