KINDER NEWS

Dear Family,

This year is flying by! We have already had 2 months of Kindergarten! This week our class will be focusing on the shapes they see in nature and in our neighborhood. We will also be reading about the shapes we see around us. We are also reviewing the sight words: I, the, we, see, a, and, like. Look for these sight words in every day reading with your child (books, magazines, etc.) Reinforce with your child the difference between vowels and consonants. Ask your child to sing the vowel song for you!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Chapman and Mrs. Wright

October 3, 2016 Week 8

Language Arts

High-Frequency Word: like  Write the word like on paper and have your child trace it. Then say sentences and have your child write like each time you say the word.

Phonics/Letter ID/Handwriting:  Tt Invite your child to play a game of “I Spy.” Say sentences and have your child find objects whose names begin or end with the letter t, such as “I spy a table. I spy a pot.”

Vocabulary: materials, nature  Invite your child to hunt for shapes found in nature or on materials. Then invite your child to draw pictures of each item.

Category Words: shapes Say simple riddles that include different shape words. Have your child guess each object.

We are pre-teaching the concept of sound spelling in order to write words we don’t know yet to make a simple sentence. This takes a lot of practice to master. Please be patient with your child when learning this concept. Click on this link to learn more about the research behind sound spelling or “phonetic” spelling.

Math

We are working on Chapter 3. The focus of this chapter is counting and writing numbers 6-9. This includes recognizing, writing, counting and decomposing the numbers. We will review the vocabulary: more, fewer, less than, and greater than.

This is a “ten frame”…when it is full it shows 10

This “ten frame” shows 7 counters: 5 red counters and 2 yellow counters. This is how we learn to “decompose” numbers in class, which is the framework for addition and subtraction.

This “ten frame” shows another way to make 7:

4 red counters and 3 yellow counters. You will see this in the homework pages as well.
