The College is currently working with that student to address the situation. Two students actually left the program during the internship period for various reasons. However, there was positive reports about mentoring at the dealership with students being engaged in their work there. There are currently five students placed at internships across the region.Gabe spoke that the current student placed with him is doing well during his internship, and has integrated into the team with the other technicians. He continued that the student is ready to work now, despite there being a year of instruction remaining. The program has worked well, and many of the younger technicians have been enthusiastic about offering mentorship.Alex continued that the PACT students are missed when they return for their classroom-based quarter. His current placement is very skilled and as such, there is a need to keep challenging him! Alex summarized that the PACT students are a key part of the team, and have far more abilities than other technicians who are not enrolled in the program.Following from Alex’s comments, Teresa noted that it is important as a recruiter to hear which students are doing well so that she can identify on strong candidate types. She continued that it is the hope of both herself and Michaela to one day have enough candidates to be more selective about entry into the program. The committee further discussed the need to immerse students in the shop experience so that they are fully engaged to avoid attrition. Involving mentors in problem solving, and forming relationships, helps to support the student through the program and contributes to completion and success.Mike thanked the dealers for their comments and noted that the Department is always interested in feedback so that the program can continuously be improved. They will also be inviting students to do an end of quarter review. Michaela reiterated that hearing about any problems or potential issues at the earliest possible moment could help her to connect with students and avoid anything escalating.Brian continued that he was pleased to report that the class is averaging about a B to B- in exams and quizzes, with the most recent average being 85%. Students are in class 40 hours a week, and are about to head into Engine Performance 1 and 2. Drew continued that the curriculum is ready and he will be teaching the units.RecruitmentMichaela reported that there are five students in the pipeline for the next academic year. She continued that she has had to turn more candidates away this year because of poor driving records: this remains an obstacle and she continues to stress the importance of a clean driving record during High School visits. Michaela also encouraged the dealers present to connect with new employees who might be interested in entering the program, as there was time to make arrangements before the next class starts in August. She continued that there is an effort to connect students with career services, including materials and setting up the job shadow exercise. Teresa commented that her visits to the High Schools with Michaela had been very sobering in terms of behavior etc., which made her appreciate Michaela’s efforts even more. She reiterated that the barrier of pre-employment screening remains, and it was essential to discuss screenings etc. with parents and guardians as well as potential students. Teresa also reminded the committee members that there is a referral bonus for sending students into the program. With the shortage of technicians ongoing, there is a focus on filling the pipeline.Teresa continued that Dick Hannah is developing marketing content specific to PACT, with a budget approved for paid advertising on Facebook. The committee discussed the caps for the program: whilst it is set at 20 students, there is inevitable attrition so ideally 22 to 24 need to be recruited. Students need to be in place before the end of June to avoid Financial Aid cut-off dates etc.Teresa reminded committee members to be inclusive of all potential PACT students: Admins, sales, warehouse, lot attendants etc. the recruitment area is broad and includes the whole Portland Metro. Michaela reiterated that, whilst there is enthusiasm for the program across academic disciplines etc., it is still an ongoing challenge to educate students and parents about the career potential of the industry. Jake spoke to the need to highlight the management potential for students, and the earning scope. PACT Training – DepartmentBrian announced that he has completed his PACT instructor qualifications and the Mike will follow shortly: there are 240 self-studies in total.
