Foreword

A letter to our dealers from Honda

I'm pleased to provide an update on the progress of the Honda Environmental Leadership Program, also known as the Honda Green Dealer program. Since the program's launch in 2011 with a handful of dealers, we've witnessed rapid growth as hundreds of auto, powersports, and power equipment dealers across the U.S. have joined our voluntary program to reduce their carbon footprint, waste and water usage. The program provides dealers with support for data collection, environmental assessment, expert advice, implementation and results verification.

We're proud to say that more than 150 dealers across all product lines have received the Honda Environmental Leadership Award, earning Silver, Gold, and top level Platinum designations. Among our Platinum award winners, three have earned the distinction of being "electric grid neutral" for producing as much or more energy from renewable energy sources than they consume from their local electric utilities, over a one-year measurement period. In fact, a Honda dealer was the first auto dealer in the world to become electric grid neutral.

The overall environmental result is significant. Since the program began in 2012, Honda Green Dealers have collectively reduced their CO2 output by approximately 34,000 metric tons. This is not the only impressive "green" stat: the same dealers have cumulatively saved $7.5 million in energy costs since.

One of the keys to the success of our program is our comprehensive Green Dealer Guide, which provides a roadmap for dealers to quantifiably reduce their energy and water consumption. This unique resource provides step-by-step detailed guidance to implement systems and technologies that help dealers achieve their carbon and water reduction goals.

While it was developed with our dealerships in mind, the guide can be used by any business owner interested in lowering their energy costs and reducing their environmental impact. That's why we've made it available as a free, open-source download on our Green Dealer website for anyone interested in the subject at greendealer..

If you haven't already, I encourage you to take action now to reduce your energy consumption. As our green dealers have demonstrated, reducing energy and water use are achievable goals that can save money, address climate change, and inspire others to make a difference for the future of our planet. Your customers will thank you.

Introduction

Introduction

Background

As part of its global initiative to reduce carbon emissions, Honda developed a program to help U.S. dealerships reduce building-related carbon dioxide emissions.

In 2011, an initial pilot program identified the unique energy needs of automotive dealerships with varying sizes, locations, and ages. Interior and exterior lighting and HVAC systems make up the majority of energy consumption and costs, and by appropriately addressing these systems, dealerships can both reduce energy use AND save money.

At the time, there was no established award-based program that focused on how to reduce energy consumption and minimize costs for automotive dealerships. This prompted development of the Honda Environmental Leadership Program, which launched in April 2012. Since launch, the program resulted in cumulative energy cost savings of $7.5M and approximately 34,000 tons of CO2 savings across all Honda brands in the United States1. This updated program streamlines award pathways and leverages four years of lessons learned to help Honda dealerships minimize environmental impact by focusing on reduced energy consumption and cost savings.

? Reduce energy consumption: The Honda Environmental Leadership Program focuses on measurable energy reductions, targeting a 10% or greater reduction in dealership total energy use. With a 10% reduction, a dealership is recognized with the Silver award; a 30% reduction is recognized with the Gold award; and with a 50% reduction, a dealership earns the highest level Platinum award.

? Maximize cost savings: The Honda Environmental Leadership Program also focuses on cost savings. Significant reductions in energy use can be achieved by low- or no-cost measures, and a simple payback of zero to five years is considered core to the program.

This Green Dealer Guide provides recommendations based on a comprehensive set of environmental guidelines designed by Honda specifically for dealerships enrolled in the Honda Environmental Leadership Program. By making this information accessible to the public, Honda hopes to provide a path for all automotive dealerships to reduce their environmental impact, thereby contributing to a healthier and more sustainable future.

1 Honda internal calculation based on data from U.S. EPA and DOE through Dec 2016. Cost saving, CO2 reductions are published on greendealer..
