Section Three – Interactions & Grooming 10 minutes

For this exercise evaluators will interact with the dog in a calm setting. This interaction period will establish baseline behaviors for the dog and handler prior to introducing more stressful conditions. This exercise will be used to evaluate the handler and dog in basic socialization situations, and will be an opportunity to observe how the team works together. In addition, the evaluator will have an opportunity to examine the dog closely. Note the appearance and grooming of the handler and the dog. Ask if you can pet the dog and perform a basic grooming check. Lift each front paw. Check the ears for foul odors. Go over the dog lightly with your hands, noting if the dog is reactive, and that the coat is clean. Ask if you can give the dog a 10 second restraining hug.

Section Seven – Role Play Scenarios 20 minutes

The purpose of this test is to determine how a team works in a distraction filled environment, such as a shelter. You will be assessing the team for how they move through the environment, how they interact with role playing victims, how they use their dog, and how the dog reacts to all this. Sound effects will be playing in the background as the Hopeful teams work the scenarios. Three stations will be setup with role players at each one who will act out a different set of circumstances. Teams should be given about 3-5 minutes at each station. Evaluators for the teams working the scenario should not participate as role players if possible. This will allow the evaluators to observe their teams.

Section Eight – Crate Testing 15 minutes

The purpose of this test is to determine if the dog has any problems being left in their crate for 10 minutes with the handlers not present. It is preferable that each team uses their own crate, but they may use crates provided by HOPE members. Handlers may use any kind of reward to get dogs to enter the crate. They should not force their dog to enter. This test should be done as a group, and in a quiet indoor area. If a dog begins to show excessive stress, ask the handler to remove the dog and then leave the area.
