Purpose

In the following sections we will compare the Ac.T( series of instruments to their nearest competitors. Information on competitor instruments has been obtained from various sources including their Internet web sites. We have detailed what the competition says about their products and compared feature by feature to our own products. By clearly understanding how the customer sees the competitor we can better understand how our own products can compete and how the customer also perceives them.

The first section is a Product Advantages Summary to help in developing lockout bid specifications and identifies the key differentiating features between the competitors.

The next section provides a brief overview of each competitor and excerpts of what each competitor say about there own instruments, followed by a matrix comparing the features of the Ac.T diff 2( and

Ac.T diff( analyzers to that of the competition.

The last section compares the features of the Ac.T diff 2 analyzer with that of the COULTER Ac.T 8/10, Ac.T diff, MD(, MDII( and T series instruments.

The major worldwide competitors are:

ABBOTT DIAGNOSTICS

Abbott’s aggressiveness in employing multiple sales strategies has allowed them to increase hematology sales. Abbott is soon to release the CD1200, which they are advertising as being currently under development. The CD1200 is a small Ac.T clone, this will relieve the pressure on the CD1700 which they have been forced to sell down to the Ac.T series but is actually a competitor for the mid range COULTER ONYX( analyzer. The CD1300 is an export version of the 1200 and includes closed vial cap piercing

SYSMEX(

SYSMEX has captured a large share of the market in the Far East, they have also experienced some level of success in Europe and the Middle East. In the US SYSMEX have signed a distributorship agreement with Roche Diagnostics Corporation, following a global Cooperation agreement between SYSMEX and Roche Diagnostics of Basel, Switzerland. Roche will exclusively represent the SYSMEX hematology line in the US from Febuary 1st 1999.

Their current product range is extensive with products for the very low volume to the large volume user. They are also capable of offering automated hematology workstations, in addition, they have a successful range of reticulocyte counters and coagulometers.

The main competitor to the new Ac.T diff 2 instrument from SYSMEX will be the new KX21. Prior to the KX21 and in the absence of closed vial sampling, the main SYSMEX competitor was the K1000. This is now relatively old, but has a reputation of being a compact reliable analyzer.

KX21

What the competition says about their product

Simplicity in operation

Before analysis, a comprehensive automatic start-up is performed including electronic self-checking, rinsing and filling of all hydraulic lines and a background check. Once completed, control bloods or patient samples are run by simply pushing the start switch. The KX-21 automatically aspirates, dilutes and analyzes a whole blood sample and provides 18 parameter test results. The sample size required for the whole blood mode is 50 uL and 20 uL in the predilute mode. Results are printed on the built-in thermal printer and 240 test results can be stored electronically in the analyzer.

• Automatic self-testing startup features

• Single Start button operation

• Small sample size requirements

• On board storage for 240 test results

Simplicity for multiparameter analysis

• Data for 18 parameters plus 3 histograms RBC, PLT and WBC (tri-modal) with complete display of all data on back-lit LCD display

• Easy display and printing of data retrieved from memory

• Predilute mode available

Clinical information includes 18 hematologic parameters plus histograms for RBC, PLT, and WBC (tri-modal) cell populations. All data including the histograms are presented via the LCD screen for easy and quick review. Previous results can be retrieved from stored data and displayed or printed again depending on the operator's requirements

Simplicity for quality management

• Highly accurate detection technology, including our precise Sample

• Rotor Valve with floating discrimination of the RBC, PLT and WBC

• populations is a Sysmex exclusive

• Easy to use QC programs; X-bar and L-J

• Monitoring and flagging functions for reliable reporting

Accurate detection technology, a Sysmex hallmark, is incorporated in the KX-21. The Sample Rotor Valve (SRV) used in the KX-21 is a new version of the ones used in our high-end analyzers. These SRVs precisely measure the required volume of sample to provide accurate and reproducible test results. The "Floating Discriminator" function of the WBC, RBC and PLT channels determines the optimum cell size disrimination level for each individual sample. Six on-board QC files with X-bar and L-J capabilities provide superior quality control for reliable reporting.

Simplicity in Maintenance

Daily maintenance of the KX-21 is extremely simple. After analysis, pressing the SHUTDOWN key causes the KX-21 to automatically rinse all hydraulic lines and shuts itself down. Weekly, monthly and quarterly maintenance is also easy and self-prompting by the analyzer's software program. Because the KX-21 uses a newly developed version of our cyanide-free reagent for hemoglobin measurement, there are no biohazard or waste treatment problems. The compact bench top design takes up a minimum of space with dimensions of 420mm width and 355mm depth. The pneumatics and lysing reagent bottle are housed inside the analyser.

K1000

What the competition says about their product

The K-1000 is the most popular Sysmex analyzer and a best-seller over the last years. In Europe more than 3.000 units have been installed.

Compact size, easy operation and maintenance are the main features of this system, well suited as the main analyzer in smaller laboratories.

The K-1000 reports 18 parameters including three-part differential. Histograms and results are printed on integrated thermal printer. A LCD-display guides the operator during software program setting and routine operation.

Optional PDA provides parameters beyond CBC. Optional KCP-1 provides cap piercing. K-Manager required for data management.

K4500

What the competition says about their product

The K-4500, a masterpiece of concurrent engineering, represents the synthesis of 30 years experience in hematology analysis. Automated sample handling and 18 parameter analysis including three-part differential K-4500 with a built-in pneumatic unit is a real "space saver". The optional open cap piercing sampler system can process new racks at any time. A barcode reader option ensuring positive sample identification. Built-in system software identifies abnormal specimens marking them on the integrated thermal printer. Easy key pad operation completes this compact analyzer

• 18 parameters

HORIBA (ABX hematologic) and BAYER

Horiba Group, a corporate conglomerate that provides a variety of analytical and measuring equipment, producing a broad range of products from semiconductors to cell analyzers is the parent company of ABX hematologic. Their products are sold under the ABX name in Europe and the Americas and under the Fukoda name in Japan. Their main competitor to the Ac.T Series product range is the MICROS, this product is also being sold as an OEM product under the name of ICHOR to primarily the blood bank market and under the name ADVIA( 60 by Bayer to the hematology market.

The simplicity of the touch screen user interface, flexibility and the aspiration modes on the Ac.T diff 2 are distinct advantages when compared to the MICROS 60/ADVIA 60. To view results the customer must scroll through multiple screens to observe results on the two line LCD display featured on the MICROS/ADVIA 60. The cap piercing mechanism has a tendency to core sample tubes

BECTON DICKINSON

The Becton Dickinson QBC( System has been a successful product, designed primarily for the physicians office market it has gained placements throughout the world with customers seeking a simple system that can be acquired with little or no capital expenditure. The QBC has now been improved upon with the QBC AUTOREAD( Plus System, that provides :

• The ability to use the new AccuTube.

• Increased reliability and accuracy.

• One tube for all samples.

• Expanded result ranges.

• Positive patient I.D.

When compared to Ac.T Series Product Range the QBC is slow and labor intensive, requiring multiple steps to prepare the sample for analysis. The QBC does not offer the user a full hematology profile, the system does not offer a red blood cell count and Mean Cell Volume, thereby limiting its use in the investigation of anemia. Volume of specimen used in the new AccuTube is 70ul.

The Ac.T Series is simple to use and fast, with a full 8, 10, 16 or 18 parameter blood count available in less than sixty seconds.

QBC AUTOREAD

What the competition says about their product

The QBC AUTOREAD Plus System is the world's only DRY hematology system. Only QBC offers Optical Signature Analysis, a revolutionary technology, which utilizes the distinctive signatures of each sample to obtain accurate results.

The AUTOREAD Plus, with its performance enhancing OSA technology, is dry, safe and easy to operate and maintain!

Simply collect a venous or capillary sample with the new pre-coated QBC AccuTube, spin it in the high precision QBC centrifuge and insert it into the analyzer. About a minute later, 9 quantitative results are displayed and printed.
