Duties: As Dental Hygienist Perio Disease Prevention Officer I am responsible for matters concerning the periodontal disease prevention activities including training and education.

• Developing educational materials, evaluating materials for cultural sensitivity and understanding.

• Assessing periodontal needs of the community.

• Development, implement and evaluate HP/DP programs and projects.

• Address national health objectives (Healthy People 2010, GPRA)

Highlights:

• Developed school-based oral health prevention program. Collaborative effort with the State of Arizona Department of Oral Health and the Inter Tribal Council of Arizona (ITCA).

o I serve as project officer, responsible for more than $40,000.00 in equipment secured through the State of Arizona and ITCA.

o Utilizes teledentistry and provides all preventive services such as; x-rays, cleanings, sealants, fluoride, temporary fillings, OHI, and sport mouth guards.

o Addresses 14 of 17 Healthy People 2010 objectives and all three dental GPRA objectives.

o Increased access to oral health care from 69% in 2006 to 100% in 2008 for school aged children.

• Administrative:

o Formulate the clinic schedule to coordinate all clinic activities for 6 dentists, 2 hygienists, and 14 support staff.

o HP/DP grant submissions, developing education materials, HP/DP quarterly and annual reports.

• Training:

o Develop, coordinate and implement dental assistant and provider trainings and certification.

▪ Ultrasonic and instrument techniques, Fluoride and sealant techniques, periodontal diagnosis and treatment, radiology certification/annual update, safe patient transfer training, and CPR training.

o A certified Dental Hygienist Educator through the IHS.

o Provide presentations to teachers, students, school administration, hospital departments and others by request.

• Adjunct Faculty with A.T. Still University, Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health. Dental Students are placed at the clinic to provide preventive and restorative services.

• Quarterly fluoride varnish programs with all Hopi Head Start programs (120 children), Hopi elementary schools (800( children), WIC and other early childhood programs.

• Conduct sealant retention rate studies, evaluate results, design and implement training and/or changes as needed.

• Developed and direct the new IHS continuing education course, “IHS Challenges for the Dental Hygienist”.

o Utilizing public heatlh leadership skills, I have addressed recruiting/retention, clinical and community program issues, cultural sensitivity, and professional networking challenges facing dental hygienists in the IHS.

• Deployed on the USNS comfort, Latin America Mission (June 2007)

o Provided dental care for thousands of children and adults in Belize, Guatemala and Panama

• Deployed for Hurricane Dean, San Antonio TX

o RDF-5 team member. Our deployment team responsibility was to set up a field medial station for evacuated victims due to the hurricane.

• Author of newspaper column “It’s Your Health” in the local newspaper, providing community education on oral health and other health related topics.

• Provided Dental Hygiene services at two clinics in the service unit, the only hygienist for 30,000 eligible users.

• HP/DP grant awarded for Public Health Nursing and Fluoride Varnish in the field. Children of all ages will receive oral health education during home visits.
