WHEREAS: On Thursday, May 31, 2001 a reception will be held for volunteer tutors and adult learners involved in The Cambridge Public Library Literacy Project at the Senior Center located at 806 Massachusetts Avenue; and

WHEREAS: The tutors and adult learners include native and non-native English speakers from a wide range of backgrounds; and

WHEREAS: The learners are working to improve their literacy skills in order to further their personal and professional lives and to be more involved in their communities; and

WHEREAS: Twenty-one committee volunteers meet with students weekly for one-on-one tutorials based on individualized learning plans; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That this City Council congratulate the partnership between the dedicated adult learners and the volunteers committed to helping them reach their goals and extend best wishes to all; and be it further

WHEREAS: National Nurses Week is being held the week of May 6, 2001 to honor those women and men who have committed their lives to serving the sick in our community; and

WHEREAS: "'Nurses are the True Spirit of Caring' is this year's theme for National Nurses Week this year; and

WHEREAS: The Cambridge Health Alliance has scheduled a number of events to honor the more than 500 nurses in the Alliance system who have committed themselves to serving those in need; and

WHEREAS: To underscore the fact that nurses are the "true spirit of caring" at the Alliance, nursing staff from four clinical service areas at the Alliance have been selected to talk about their experiences as health professionals who enjoy working in a community health setting; and

WHEREAS: The staff, chosen for their outstanding service at the Alliance include Louise Charles, RN, Michael Iovanni, RN, Eileen Munyon, RN, and Lola Roland, RN; and

WHEREAS: The Alliance is an important employer in our community and currently offers a number of exceptional nursing career opportunities; and

WHEREAS: To attract people to these careers the Cambridge Health Alliance each year provides scholarships to local residents pursuing careers in health care; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That this City Council designate the week of May 6, 2001 as National Nurses Week in Cambridge and thank the Cambridge Health Alliance for supporting this week that highlights the importance of the nursing profession; and be it further

WHEREAS: The Committee to Establish Italian Heritage Month worked diligently to have the Month of October officially observed as Italian Heritage Month in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the United States of America; and

WHEREAS: On October 7, 1999, Governor Argeo Paul Cellucci enacted into law, Chapter 97 of the Acts of 1999: An Act Providing for the Annual Observance of October as Italian Heritage Month; and

WHEREAS: On October 28, 1999 the U.S. House of Representatives enacted House Resolution 347, expressing its support for the goals and ideas of Italian Heritage Month and recognized the significant contributions that Italian Americans have made to the United States; and

WHEREAS: Every October, ceremonies, activities, and engagements are sponsored in celebration of Christopher Columbus' coming to America in 1492 with a focus on Italian heritage and culture; and

WHEREAS: Numerous contributions by Italians to the arts, sciences, government and humanities have had a significant positive impact on society that they are deserving of recognition; and

WHEREAS: Approximately 850,000 individuals who are Italian or of Italian descent currently reside in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; and

WHEREAS: Over 5.4 million Italians immigrated to the United States between 1820 and 1991, which today has resulted in over 26 million Americans of Italian descent, in the United States, making them the fifth largest ethnic group to reside in the United States of America; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the City Council proclaim the month of October as Italian Heritage Month.
