From blind-spot monitoring and backup cameras to lane-departure warning, collision warning and everything in between, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) represent a billiondollar opportunity in the mobile-electronics segment of the automotive aftermarket industry. Mobile-electronics products were well represented at the 2017 SEMA Show. The following is a collection of products that were on display in the New Products Showcase last year, along with commentaries by industry experts.

Tier suppliers need operating data on their components to create mobility apps that enable a direct relationship with the vehicle owner. OEM telematics systems are limited, as car manufacturers are restrictive in terms of pricing, policies and content. The opportunity exists for aftermarket telematics service providers such as Voyomotive to provide flexible and cost-effective solutions to the market.

The future of safety performance is here now, and it is called advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The aftermarket ADAS market is a $1.5 billion opportunity and is projected to rise dramatically in the next few years, fueled by consumer demand for increased safety performance of new and existing vehicles. SEMA aftermarket suppliers continue to innovate with passive safety performance systems and products such as blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning and collision-warning systems that are designed to alert drivers to potential problems. Passive ADAS products do not take control of the vehicle (as opposed to active ADAS products that avoid collisions by implementing safeguards and taking over control of the vehicle), and the driver is in control at all times. Aftermarket safety performance will see more than an 80% increase in dollar sales to dealers this year, following a 40% increase last year. Leading mobile-electronics aftermarket retailers, distributors and manufacturers such as Voxx Electronics, AAMP's Echomaster and Rydeen are creating new business and products in the aftermarket ADAS market. The Al & Ed's Autosound retail chain did $1.3 million in new business with Mobileye's aftermarket ADAS products last year alone. With approximately 4,200 car audio specialty stores around the country and more than 60 million vehicles on U.S. roads with no embedded ADAS onboard from OEMs, there are significant growth opportunities for mobile electronics players in retrofitting and upgrading vehicles with passive aftermarket ADAS products and systems.
