The home, designed by a student team from Stevens Institute of Technology, protects against flooding and wind-borne storm debris. It uses 90% less energy than other new homes and it is fully solar powered. SURE HOUSE features TruGrain? made with Resysta? decking and siding profiles on the exterior. TruGrain products are water, UV and fungal resistant. The Solar Decathlon is a collegiate competition for undergraduate and graduate students to design and build a functional net-zero prototype home of 1,000 square feet or less. Homes built by university teams from around the world are judged on ten criteria including architecture, market appeal, affordability, home life and energy balance. SURE HOUSE is a two-bedroom home priced at $290,000 and targeted for middle-class families. The design concept was inspired by the damage and aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.“This competition challenges the best and brightest minds from around the world to create innovative, highly energy-efficient homes that will change how we build,” U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said in a statement. “These homes will become the new standard in blending affordability, consumer appeal and design with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.” TruGrain decking and siding is used prominently, and was selected for its durability and aesthetics. TruGrain products contain rice husks, an agricultural waste by-product. When combined with a synthetic plastic polymer, salt and other additives, the result is almost indistinguishable from wood. Glenn Syrowitz, Commercial & Operations Director for Westech commented, “The SURE HOUSE design is a testament to the importance of resilience in home design. We extend hearty congratulations to the Stevens Institute team, and commend their innovation and commitment to their local environment. Those students felt firsthand the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, and they used it as an opportunity to improve home design and construction. Best of all, this home is one most homeowners can afford.”About WestechWestech Building Products, a Westlake company (NYSE: WLK), is a leading producer of fence, deck, rail, siding, window and door profiles servicing North America and export markets from headquarters in Houston, TX.
