RE: MONTHLY REPORT NO. 7210401 – October 2007

The following are activities and accomplishments for the month of October 2007:

Recreation Program Highlights

- The Hallandale Beach Fun in the Sun events and programs began in the month of October. Some of the highlights included a Columbus Day Celebration on October 8th where the children learned about the day and made small wooden boats to take home. A Fire Prevention Day on the 9th was offered by Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue. The Department of Public Works was able to assist this month with National Car Care Month to show people basic car maintenance. Information Technology offered an introductory computer session and the Human Services Department offered a class on the 22nd at O.B. Johnson Park on how to better communicate with children. The Police Department offered a session on crime prevention on the 23rd at the Cultural Community Center.

- This month’s Toddler Fun Time was held on Friday, October 5th and featured Jane Stratton and her puppets.

- The Hall-O-Scream Slumber Party at Johnson Park on October 26th was a ton of fun for the children as they played games, watched movies and had a wonderful breakfast prepared by staff.

- The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board went out on October 29th as the Pumpkin Brigade to judge houses for the Annual Halloween House Decorating Contest. Three winners were selected based upon design creativity and originality, and were awarded prizes at the Outhouse Festival.

- Despite inclement weather including strong winds and rain from Tropical Storm Noel, the turn-out for this year’s Outhouse Festival on October 31st was the largest yet at Peter Bluesten Park. Participants enjoyed an amazing haunted house constructed and manned by Parks and Recreation employees, a petting zoo, pony rides, children’s games, refreshments and costume contests. In addition, the Outhouse Gang rode by the park with the Hallandale Police in hot pursuit!

- The Cultural Community Center was the host for this year’s Appreciation Dinner for volunteers on October 19th and the Employee Halloween Party on October 31st.

Athletics/Aquatics/Tennis/Scholarship Highlights

Athletics (PAL)

- Youth football and cheerleading concluded its 2007 regular season. Three divisions advanced to the playoffs. Additionally, a playoff “shoot-out” was hosted by PAL on October 21st. Teams from around Dade and Broward County played overtime games in order to qualify for the playoffs.

- Youth Baseball began its regular season in the South Florida Youth Baseball League. Four teams will play other travel teams in Broward County. The regular season is scheduled to conclude in early November and playoffs are set to start on Saturday, November 3, 2007

- Youth Soccer began registration for its 2007/2008 soccer league. Boys and girls ages 5-16 will participate throughout Broward and Dade County. Practices are set to begin in November with games set to run from December to March 2008.

Aquatics

- Four pool passes were sold in October, all Adult Non-Resident.

- Swim lessons continued to be offered in October, with registrations also being accepted for November.

- Over 270 people swam at the Pool in October.

Tennis (Golden Isles Tennis Complex)

- Eleven new members joined in October 2007.

- The afterschool program began its third session October 25th and will run through November 20th.

Scholarships

- Camp attendance totaled 147 in October, an average of 37 campers per week. A total of 4 children attended camp during October via scholarship funds.

- One child received preliminary approval for a scholarship for Tae Kwon Do. Final approval will be requested of the City Manager.

Other

- No vehicle accidents in October.
