Copy the quote and then respond in a minimum of ½ page.

Journal 1 – page 41 Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

“Animals that escape go from the known into the unknown – and if there is one thing an animal hates above all else, it is the unknown. Escaping animals usually hide in the very first place they find that gives them a sense of security, and they are dangerous only to those who happen to get between them and their reckoned safe spot.”

Discuss the similarities between human and animal needs. Then make a similar hierarchy of needs as it pertains to animals.

Journal #2:

In chapter 16, Pi says: “A plague upon fundamentalists and literalists!” (p. 49).

Knowing that Pi juggles three religions, comment on this statement using knowledge, observation, or experience. (think about politics, religion, schools, etc)

Journal 3 Chapter 52

Putting water and food first on the list…list the 20 next most important items on the list (in order of importance) with an explanation of why you chose each item. Relate each item to Maslow’s hierarchy, where on the pyramid will each item be placed in order for Pi to reach self actualization?

Journal #4 Directions: Compare Pi’s description of Richard Parker on pp. 151–52 with William Blake’s poem “The Tyger.” What tone do both Martel and Blake employ in their descriptions? How do they feel about their subjects?

The Tyger

by William Blake

Tyger, Tyger, burning bright,

In the forests of the night;

What immortal hand or eye,

Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies,

Burnt the fire of thine eyes?

On what wings dare he aspire?

What the hand dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder, & what art,

Could twist the sinews of thy heart?

And when thy heart began to beat,

What dread hand? & what dread feet?

What the hammer? What the chain?

In what furnace was thy brain?

What the anvil? what dread grasp

Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears

And watered heaven with their tears:

Did he smile his work to see?

Did he who made the lamb make thee?

Tyger, Tyger, burning bright,

In the forests of the night:

What immortal hand or eye,

Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

Journal 5

“‘Life is a peephole, a single tiny entry onto a vastness—how can I not dwell on this brief, cramped view I have of things? This peephole is all I’ve got!’” (ch. 60, p. 177). Explain Pi’s peephole and contrast it with yours. How does one’s “peephole” influence one’s view of the world?

Journal 6

This novel is a parable (metaphor) for the choice between having faith in a God that cannot be proven or atheism. Describe how you feel about this choice. How do you go about making your faith-based choices? What are they influenced by? Have they evolved?
