WHAT GOD WANTS TO KNOW

“Do You Love Me?”

1. What’s easier for you: to declare that you love God, or to accept and believe that He loves you? Why?

2. Have you ever blown it so badly that you thought God would never be able to forgive you, that you were somehow disqualified from further service to Him?

What did you discover about God and about yourself in that experience?

3. Read John 21:1-9. Why do you think Peter went back to fishing again? Was it just for recreation, or do you think there’s a deeper meaning here?

4. At this point in Peter’s life, would you have nominated him to be a leader in your church? Why or why not?

5. Read John 21:10-14. What do you make of the fact that the risen Christ prepares a fish-fry on the beach for his emotionally exhausted disciples? “Come and have breakfast,” he says. What does God typically use to get your attention and get through to you when he wants to reestablish contact?

6. How do you think Peter must have felt when he saw “a fire of burning coals” waiting for him on the shore (John 21:9)? Why is this significant (cf. Jn. 18:18)?

7. Read John 21:15-19. Why do you think Jesus asks Peter three times, “Do you love me?” Why the repetition? What does this tell us about Peter? About Jesus?

8. If you had been Peter, how would you have felt by the end of the third question?

9. “Feed my lambs” … “Take care of my sheep” … “Feed my sheep.” What is Jesus saying here? What does this have to do with loving him?

10. If Jesus asked you today, “Do you love me?” how would you respond?

11. If someone says he or she loves you, what kind of behavior do you expect from that person? What does Jesus expect according to John 14:15 and what did he ask of Peter in John 21:15-19? (see also 1 John 5:1-4.)
