Using a UBS flash drive (thumb drive, flash memory stick, or whatever else you want to call those little memory devices that plug into a USB port on a computer) with your computer systems here at school.

Teachers,

As many of you are aware, it is often not possible to use a USB flash drive with your desktop computers here at school due to certain configuration problems. I have figured out a workaround that seems to work fine on Windows XP desktop computers here (not the older Windows 98 laptops though; that is a different problem.) Following is what I have determined to be a usable fix:

With your desktop computer on and logged in, double click on the “My Computer” icon. If you do not have an icon, see me to fix that.

Select the “Tools” menu item in the top menu bar.

Select “Disconnect Network Drive…”

Click on the “F Drive Sys.” Drive and click “Disconnect” at the lower right. Do NOT disconnect any other drive this way or you may create problems.

Insert your USB flash drive into an appropriate port (lower right corner or center area of IBM NetVista models, the center area of the IBM ThinkCentres or open the Dell door located on the front left of the new Dells and pick one of the two ports available there. There are additional ports located on the backs of your computers. The flash memory stick will only fit one way so don’t force it in if it does not go in with slight pressure.)

The drive should mount after a message pop-up appears from the System Tray that says new hardware has been found.

The drive will show in the listing of available drives in “My Computer.”

Move files to and from this location as you would any other drive. To disconnect the drive, simply remove the flash unit.

Hope this makes transfer of files to and from home or other systems easier for you.
