USING QUOTITION MARKS WITH OTHER PUNTUATION

• There are six types of punctuation used with quotation marks

1.     Commas

2.     Periods

Periods and commas always go inside quotation marks

3.     Colons

4.     Semicolons

Put colons and semicolons outside quotation marks

5.     Question marks

6.     Exclamation points

Question marks and exclamation point go inside the quotation marks if they apply to the quoted portion, but they go outside if they apply to the entire sentence

THINGS TO REMEMBER

• Do not punctuate indirect quotes

• Use a comma to introduce a direct quotation

• It is possible to use single quotations inside double quotations

• If a quote is separated in a sentence, do not capitalize the first word beginning the second half of the quote

• Do not close the quotation marks until the entire quote is finished.  Each sentence does not need opening and closing marks.
